Re: I have to do it.

I think these gas prices are really going to flesh out those who actually need a truck for it's utility and designed use, and those who just like the idea of owning and driving them. Those who just like the image, feel, and drive of a full-size truck are certainly going to start jumping off the ship soon, only leaving those of us who actually need them for what they were designed for. Good or bad, it's just what I see happening.

As for me, I'd honestly rather daily drive an M3, S4, G8, or something of the like, but until they figure out how to make those vehicles tow a 4000 lb trailer through the snow, or get back into the woods with a dirtbike in tow, I'm stuck driving a truck. I guess I could drop the Titan in favor of a nice sport sedan for daily driving, and buy an older, higher mileage truck for my hobbies, but I don't really like the idea of long road trips with the toys using a truck that might have reliability issues out in BFE. The angle some people are taking- sitting their trucks until the weekend and driving an econobox during the work week- just doesn't interest me, not to mention the fact that the move doesn't make sense on paper, for me at least.

I will say that if the low 20's highway reported for the new '09 Dodge and '09 Chevys actually proves true in real life, then my Titan is gone no matter how much I dig the design and the way it drives. I get 13.5 MPG no matter if it's city or highway- driving conservatively- which is the worst MPG of any 1/2T truck I've owned or had experience with.

I agree but it's possible to become more common as this continues. I didn't really "need" a pickup bed but I do seem to utilize a heavy heavy hauler at least once per month, more so in the Spring time, so I got an Armada instead so additional seating can be utilized as well. If these prices do continue towards $5+ /gal, I can see changing to a much smaller DD and leaving the "truck" parked just because paying for it while parked would still be cheaper than renting a truck everytime that I need one.

It's definitely changing the way that I think for sure though.

I commute 95 miles round trip three times a week on SoCal freeways and i'm getting 17.5 mpg. For me, just slowing down to 65 and setting it on cruise control increased my mpg by 3! If i could, I would go 55, but 65 is already pushing it on the freeway now days. My best is 20 mpg at 55 with five adults in the car in New Mexico. By the way, my 06 is a SE CC with BT so i have the lower gears in back.

Re: I have to do it.

It's not that I don't need a truck because I do. I also have hobbies that involve towing a trailer to race tracks as well as snowmobiles in the winter.

My problem is that 80% of the time i'm sitting in traffic commuting to and from work. I don't need a truck for that.

So I would rather trade my nice truck for a nice commuter and buy a **** box truck for my hobbies and stuff.

FYI my post wasn't singling you out, if that's what you thought. I saw the bike in the avatar, which to most means the need for a truck.

Agreed - I purchased my Titan Feb 2006 - gas was low $2/gal in SoCal - I needed a Toy Hauler (don't need to now!) and I drive the truck to grad school a total of 16 miles R/T.

Last year - on a whim, I picked up a new VW Rabbit - can honestly say it's more than paying off in spades on fuel..

FF to yesterday - I paid $127 to fill up the truck..

The BEST I have pushed out has been 15 mpg...

Re: I have to do it.

Well I did it. Stoped by a Mazda dealer last night to look at cars and ended up buying a Speed3. They got me out of my Titan with a lower monthly payment on the Speed.

Now I just need a P.O.S. truck.

A speed 3? I thought you wanted a P.O.S. truck?

Re: I have to do it.

Part of my absolutely does not need a truck, I have no toy hauler, I have no boat. BUT, I love the size of the back seat for my family and friends to go on trips, it is way more comfortable than any car I have ever owned. Running to home depot or Target or anything else makes it easy to pick up whatever I want and not worry if I can get it into the car. The 4x4 is nice in the winter.

So even though I don't NEED a truck, it is useful to have and I don't mind the fill ups because I only have to do it every couple of weeks.

yeah I agree with you I don't NEED a truck but I do need a vehicle that can hold my wife and 3 kids (2 of which are in carseats). So the alternative is not an option for me (the dreaded "M" word)

Re: I have to do it.

While I didn't sell my truck, I did start commuting in with my wife every morning. We work about 2 blocks from each other and the commute is about 45 miles roundtrip. This is something that we should've started months ago, but I wasn't willing to get up 2 hours early until gas reached the $4 mark. I miss driving my truck, but it makes no sense when the wife's Civic gets 30+ mpg. I'm locked in to the Titan for another 18 months - at that time, I'll definitely down-size to a smaller truck. Possibly the Tacoma.
