Re: tow vs big tow

Just because the dealer/salesman says your truck is equipt with some option doesn't actually have any basis is truth. I bought an '06 4x4 crew cab SE that the salesman said had a tow package. I checked before buying. It didn't. The previous owner had the hitch added at the dealership. from that salesman.
The trailer brake harness is there on all titans. Just like all the places for relays and fuses under the hood. They just need to be connected and plugged in to work.
The full tow package aka "Big Tow" should come with the mirrors and temp gauge in the dash. that's the best way to tell if the rest of the package is factory installed. The hitch and the plug and wiring is an hour to install so can't be trusted as an indicator. tow hooks came with other package options so they fail the required test too.

I thought there was also an additional tranny cooler added up in the grill but haven't been able to confirm that rumor seeing as how mine is the "small tow" package.

Re: tow vs big tow

I have a nonbig tow and it has the transmission cooler. Whats up with the rear diff. it will spin both wheels if I hold the brake but only one if I hit the gas without brake?

What class hitch does the big tow truck come with class 3 or 4?

All Titan come with two transmission cooler BT or not.
I believed the OEM hitch is a class 4

Read up on just how a rear differential works. You'll then understand why both wheels can spin.

And yes, ALL Titans have the tranny cooler and tow mode.

Re: tow vs big tow

I just went through the same thing on my truck. I just bought a 2008.5 CC titan with the TOW PACKAGE. It is no longer called Big Tow it is just called tow package. Also on the sticker it wont tell you the gear ratio. It just will say class IV hitch, 7 pin wiring harness w/brake prewiring, Extended mirriors and HD battery and front tow hooks. Also the new XE trucks on the so called Big Tow will no longer have the temp gauge but will have the gears. The XE also will no longer have the tailgate assist. If you are buying an SE or LE look at the mirriors then you will know if it has the bigger tow, I dont think XE has the mirriors but I forgot for sure. Trust me on these facts I researched them for over a month at many dealerships here.

Re: tow vs big tow

Also Yes ALL Titans have trans cooler, same trans, and same moter same rearends Big tow just has lower gears. But 2008 XE should have all the options with big tow. 2008.5 XE no longer gets some of the things I stated above.

it might not say it on the sticker but if you look under the truck at the rearend it has a sticker that has the axle ratio and if dont say 336 you dont have big tow.

Re: tow vs big tow

I just went through this with my truck. Bought a used 07 CC XE.

Dealer said it had tow packge based on tow/haul button and aluminum finned rear diff. cover.

Got the truck home and it had the wrong rear end ratio. This is what governs the towing rating of a vehicle to a large degree. And is the most expensive to change out. Especially since Nissan does not sell the gears, you have to buy whole rear end.

I had to take the truck back to the dealer to install correct rear end.

Best way to check is to climb under the truck and check the manufacturers sticker on the diff. It has the rear end ratio printed on it. If it has a 3.36:1 ratio it should have the tow package.

All the other stuff can be added later. The XE does not have the tow mirrors as an option because these are power/heated as a minimum and the XE does not have this wiring in the wiring harnesses. Although you would think that for a couple of bucks Nissan could include this in the wiring harness.

The hookup is up under the dash in all Titans for the brake controller, you just have to get the harness for your controller to the plug.
