best way ever to save gas

I just couldn't take the $120-$140 a week I was spending on gas so after fighting with my wife for about a month ( she wanted me to get rid of the titan) I finally convinced her to let me get a bike. My new Suzuki SV1000s gets about 40-45 mpg's. Oh and did I mention that it is fast as hell... take that woman

Re: best way ever to save gas

Yeah... that's ONE way to do it.. Park the truck and wait for it to come back up in Antique value! Just be safe out there, dude.... 4-wheelers aren't looking for you, so you'd best be on your toes....

The sv1000 is a pretty sharp bike! I am partial to the full fairing though! Stay sharp though, cars and trucks do NOT watch out for you!!!!!

Re: best way ever to save gas

wait, to save gas you put your life on the line by riding a bike? why not just buy a beater 4cyl car for that price and be a lil safer.

Re: best way ever to save gas

i dont have a bike, well i do but it needs work, its a 79 yamaha xs1100 special edition, never even had a chance to ride it. i traded a tractor that a neighbor gave me that me and my dad repaired for the bike.

i let the titan sit in the garage and i drive my 94 probe that gets 28 mpg. the probe cost me 600 bux +about 100 for a tune up +60 for door speakers so i have music + 3 oil changes so far since i got it. if i kept driving the titan i would be flat broke all the time lol.

A $3000 Honda Civic ('94-'97) that gets roughly 40 mpg would have been a better choice I would think.

Civic huh? From a practical point of view, you might be correct. But where's the fun in that?

lol, def no fun but atleast you have a much greater chance of keeping your head on your shoulders rather then through some other cars windshield.

What's the break even point with the bike where you start saving money?

If your bike is new, it was probably $7500 or so. I have about $2000 in gear that I wear when I ride, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you already had gear since you bought an open class bike.

$140 @ $4/gallon is ~35 gallons of gas. At an average of 14mpg that's almost 500 miles/week. Driving a motorcycle 500 miles a week @ 40mpg would be about 12 gallons which is $48. You're saving $90/week in gas.

So assuming you never drive the truck, it would be $7500/$90 - 83 weeks just based on the purchase price and gas at $4/gallon. That doesn't take into account insurance or the fact that large bore bikes are more maintenance intensive than cars or smaller bikes - they eat chains/sprockets/tires/brake pads much faster.

If you want to 2 wheel it, that's cool. But buying a literbike isn't necessarily saving money - you're just using it for another vehicles vs. putting it in the tank of your pickup.

Thumbs up Re: best way ever to save gas

I have to agree with saving gas on two wheels. I used my 94 F350 4x4 with a big block 460 to get back into a Harley. I was getting about 6MPG not a misprint 6 miles a gallon. I loved the truck but it was killing me. I got my Harley and ride it to work as much as possible. Plus it is a good ride with little or no traffic when my Fire Shift starts at 6 am and I get off around 7 the next day.

Re: best way ever to save gas

sounds like a nice bike... definately be careful though. We have had alot of motorcycle riders killed here in the last few months. There are tons of new bikes commuting these days. The cars WILL NOT SEE YOU.
