Re: Recovery Strap

Find someone in the Army who works in the Heavy Equipment Recovery and Mnt. battalions. Get one from them. I did. If it will snatch out an 18wheeler ot tank, I promise you won't break it before you rip out your undercarriage. LOL

Re: Recovery Strap

Get an old boat strap or a crane strap. You'll never break either one and their free.

Re: Recovery Strap

For full size trucks get one that's at least rated for 20,000lbs and about 3"'s wide. And stay away from the ones with the metal hooks on the end because they can be very dangerous if/when they come loose. Nothing like a 1lb piece of steel going airborne at about 100mph towards your truck! If you just want a fairly cheap one that still holds up pretty good check out harbor frieght. they have a 3"x30' with the loop ends for like $25.
MEG: where can you find crane straps for free? I'd LOVE to get one but i can only seem to find them on ebay and crap for big $$$$. Most people are asking $50 for a 20 footer!

I have two very close friend's whose parents own crane company's. lol But I'd be willing to bet if you went to a local crane place and asked they'd probably give you a few of their old ones. All the ones I get have little knicks in them and once they get freyed in any spot they have to get rid of them, so I'm sure if you offered them $20 or something they'd probably hook you up with a few.

Re: Recovery Strap

I picked up a couple from The Home Depot. They're rated for 20k LBS and work great. And unless you want to tie it to the vehicle you're pulling out, get the metal hooks! Do it right and they work just fine.

Re: Recovery Strap

For absolute strength and weight savings, I would suggest these two:
http://www.samsonrope.com/index.cfm?...ope=190&inst=1
http://www.samsonrope.com/index.cfm?...ope=192&inst=1

It is super easy to splice an eye into and you can make them as long or short as you want. I used to carry about 50' of the blue 3/8" in the truck all the time. But, I get it free from work.

Re: Recovery Strap

Get one of these:
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...tass/strap.jpg

check this website:
http://www.desertrat.com/products/?id=4102

Do not get one with metal hooks. Despite what other people say they are extremely unsafe. I've personally seen someone use a strap with metal hooks, who was 100 percent sure he "did it right", nearly kill another person whose truck he was attempting to recover. The problem is very few people know how to use straps correctly. If you do use them correctly there is no need for metal hooks.

Re: Recovery Strap

OP - No metal hooks! The harbor freight ones are fine, but they seemed to be indefinatley out of the 3" version around these parts. I ended up getting a 3"x30' from 4wheelParts, Smittybuilt brand, I think it was about $25.

Yellow - HOLY SCHNIKIES that stuff looks awesome! Say if you can get it for free, can you hook a brother up for cheap?

Re: Recovery Strap

I've used "tug boat" type rope, worked very good as already posted, but unless you can get some from work or such then its a manufatured recovery strap...

Look for brand names, and I would STAY AWAY from the cheap Chi-wan-ese junk from Habor Freight...When you need that strap most you find out they didn't sew the loop correctly and you're still stuck. Sometimes you bite the bullit and buy quaility stuff.

+1. These straps are usually multi-fuction and are rated for everything from HMVV to barges.

Re: Recovery Strap

+1 on getting a strap without hooks. People have been injured and even killed by those big metal hooks.

Straps WITH hooks are made for towing and are generally a lot less flexible then recovery straps.

A recovery strap WITHOUT hooks will stretch more. When it stretches it will want to return to its original length and will transfer that energy to the vehicle being recovered. They are better suited for recovering a vehicle from mud or sand, and much safer.

eta: and if you ever have to pull someone out, practice wrapping a jacket or towel around the middle of the strap. If the strap breaks the towel will slow the strap down and may prevent your vehicle form being damaged.

Re: Recovery Strap

Try OKoffroad.com

They have an 80,000 lb Mega recovery strap that is 6 inches wide and 30 feet long. Your truck will break before it does.

I have one of the 2"x30 feet XD 4x4 recovery straps rated for 30,000 lbs, and it would serve for anything I would want to pull out.
