before anyone bashes american workers, you really should look at the context of what you are saying. you say work ethic is low. why do you think that is? maybe because people are afraid they will be the next plant to close down and move overseas where the workers are paid a fraction of what we call minimum wage.
For what it's worth, free trade in a global economy will equalize the countries involved. in other words, those countries with a poor economy will be raised and those with strong economies (like us) will be lowered. free trade will take the $20/hour worker and $1/hour worker and pay them each $10. Like it or not, this is what is happening. How many times have you heard a businessman say "we just can't compete." They usually say this shortly before moving to China or Mexico.
It's easy to lay blame. At least look at the whole picture before you do it.
Ask yourself...When you think of Top Quality in the Automotive world, what Company names come to mind? Hummmmm ....When you think of the World's safest, which companies come to mind?

You did hear me bash American workers. What you DIDN'T hear me do is place blame. My post didn't say there was no reason, although I tend to think there's more to it than you suggest, just stating the obvious as far as quality work being done in other countries rather than our own.

I have owned 4 Nissans, 3 Toyotas, Chevys, Fords, but no Dodges. Never could get past the Dodge name. I don't think there has ben any differences I have found in the last 40 years between all the above makes. Some problems with all. Lot of problems with some. Best vehicle I have had as far as problems was a 1998 Pontiac Granp Prix GT. 110 thousand miles and looks and drives brand new. Everything that came on the car works now. Seen the Pontiac service guy 1 time for loose wire, got a free oil change. My Titan truck, 2004 CC SE , Big tow, all options but 4x4, has had a few problems . All have been fixed and my service dealer was happy to help. This truck so far is the best truck I have had. There are problems in quality at some auto plants but American plants are not alone with problems. I agree with the Union statment. Unions have been a problem for our plants but you can thank the liberals like Teddy ( Chapaquid****) Kennedy for those problems. Unions back 40-50 years ago were a good thing but now has gone to he-- in a hand basket. After hanging out in a few rice patties about 38 years ago , an 18 year old scared to death kid, came to realize that it was a pretty good feeling to set foot back on the shores of the good old USA again and at 57 years old I sometimes have to try to defend her again. We got our problems, but hell who aint.
I don't think you can lay all of the blame on the assembly line worker. The design engineers are a big part of the problem as well. Remember the Pinto, Vega, X car, and K car. All of these cars were hyped to the hilt but were pieces of junk.

And to answer the question...NO, I don't trust the American worker as much as the Japanese worker
Quote:
Maybe the guy was in a hurry to go to lunch! Buy American?...or "Look for the union label"? (thankfully, Nissans' non-union!....or we'd REALLY be in trouble!)

work ethic here is non-existant
When i read things like these statements i pulled from your earlier posts, it sounds like you are bashing the American worker and union workers in general and basically blaming them for the faults of your vehicle. sorry if i misinterpreted.

Reason: fixing quote marks
I also have more faith in Japanese workmenship then American. The domestic automakers have a bad reputation that they brought upon themselves. You could tell which cars were "built on Friday." There are numerous stories of workers INTENTIONALLY screwing up. I work hard for my money, and will spend it where I can get the best vehicle for my dollar. For many years, those vehicles came from Japan. Domestic vehicles were of no comparison, from an engineering or manufacturing standpoint. All of the car's I've owned that were Japanese built were very well put together. I've owned a couple vehicles that were built in Japan AND in the here...
I had an '88 Mazda 626. It was a 5dr. that was imported from Japan, and seemed better put together then it's American built 626/MX-6/Ford Probe cousins.
I own a '92 Mitsubishi Galant VR4, imported from Japan. It has better build quality then it's mechanically identical cousins built here, the Eclipse, Laser, and Talon, which I own two of.
My '96 Maxima was flawless.
From an engineering standpoint, I've worked on many diffent cars. I used to hate working on American cars. Everywhere I looked there was evidence of cost cutting and parts bin engineering. Cheap was a word frequently uttered. Japanese cars have a different feel to them, like parts were designed to fit together, not made to fit.
Today the gap is much narrower. It's narrower because car buyers today are much more well informed, and have higher standards. There is not as much blind loyalty as there was in the past.
Having lived in Tokyo for 5 years I have to say from my personal experiences that the Japanese have a work ethic that is unmatched by any country i've seen. This is not to say all Americans workers have bad ethics but the majority do in my opinion.
For example when my old squadron would turn in an aircraft for re-work we would sometimes contract the Japanese and when an aircraft came back from them it was polished i mean they not only fixed the aircraft they would take care of it cosmetically because they didnt feel it was acceptable to return an aircraft that wasnt performing and looking it's best..Clearly well above and beyond their required duties in rework. On the other hand when we had Americans doing the rework the failure rate of the work and parts installed was unfortunately astronomical.
It's everywhere i go from the local convenience store to the auto shop. You have to constantly watch you A** or someone will screw you over or you have to pull teeth to get a little customer service. I love America dont get me wrong thats why i serve however i think we can all learn from the japanese.

It seems amusing that I have read hundreds of comments in this forum about the shoddy work done by Nissan dealership's mechanics, salesmen, and managers....is that the work ethic you're talking about?

I guess maybe you're right. There's really nobody else to blame but the workers themselves. Now do they have this ethic because of some of the reasons you mentioned?...maybe but, there's also the lazy "It's not MY job" mentality too. There's no excuse in my book to be the most advanced, richest country on the planet and still produce an inferior product. Sure they'll farm work overseas.....not only because it's cheaper but....., and they just don't get it, they work harder, faster and better! We can build cars such as some of the Caddys that are actually pretty damn good! Why can't they also build other cars the same way?...We have the technology, the workforce and the money. Low moral just CAN'T be it. It's been this way for decades! Way before the threat of sending work outside the US came into play.

You made the right choice Prometheus. I don't think you would be happy without your Titan. Toyota isn't bad either by any means, but it isn't a mighty Titan.
