$16.95 to repair cracked exhaust manifolds!

Some of you may have been following my thread concerning the $2449 estimate I received from my local dealership to replace my exhaust manifolds and b-pipes.

Searching around a bit on the internet, I came across this stuff. I wouldn't normally bat an eye at this sort of product, but I have used their core product, POR-15, to repair a rusty, and pretty much missing, floorboard of a 280z I restored. Let me tell you, that stuff is AMAZING. I hung a paper napkin up by some utility clips, coated it with POR, and came back the next morning. I tried to stab a knife through it, with no success. I finally took a hammer and swung at it, only for the napkin to bend....it never cracked or tore.

Anyway, they have another product called Fireseal 2000, which they have developed to fix holes and cracks in exhaust manifolds. It looks pretty good, and only costs $16.95. Even if it doesn't work, all I will be out is $20 and an afternoon of labor. Worth a shot for us out-of-warranty cheapo's that want a less expensive option than a $600 set of headers! I'm not sure, but depending on the location of the crack, this might can be done without even removing the manifolds....egh....maybe not.

FIRE SEAL 2000-POR-15 Inc.

This company's products are light-years beyond JB Weld. Good question on whether or not they are cast...I haven't seen a great picture of them. Can anyone chime in on this? Cast iron? aluminum?

I was sure it was cast until I saw this picture...this one looks too shiny to be cast, unless it was one hell of a cast. Look at the primaries immediately after the flanges...wish the picture was better.

I agree with you JD Weld make much better products and have more options.
there was another porduct posted a while ago, regarding the same thing, fixing leaks and such.
it looks like a piece of paper that you just expose to Air and slap on the exhuats and let it cure.
can't find it for the life of me.

and by the way Light Years is used to meassure distance. not time.

Actually light years applies to both time and distance.

Actually, if you read my comment more closely, you'll see that I was claiming that POR-15's products are better than JB Weld. As far as my "light-years" comment is concerned, it is a figure of speech...we're discussing exhaust manifolds, not astronomy and physics.

I'm still failing to see how you agree with me?

Your comment: JB Weld > POR-15

My comment: POR-15 > JB Weld

Anywho...back to the subject at hand...anyone know for sure the construction material of the OEM headers? I'm picking up the Fireseal 2000 tomorrow and, depending on the word from Nissan on a good will fix, I might tackle it this weekend.

If I do decide to attempt this fix, I will document the process with photos and perhaps video, including removing the manifolds.

I'm willing to bet the header will contunue to crack under the patch. Might as well not risk it.

Re: $16.95 to repair cracked exhaust manifolds!

I've been reading alot of discussion regarding the cracked manifolds lately. I dont mean this to sound stupid but besides the noise it makes what other issues result from a cracked mainifold? Will the crack continue to lengthen?
I have a slight rattle when accelerating, I think it only happens when it is cold but can tbe sure? It isnt so load that anyone else would notice, so whats the downside if I dont get it fixed? My truck has 108k so I'm well out of warranty consideration. BTW she runs great...other than needing a new tailpipe.
