Thanks JetTech, I had missed that detail, but knew I was missing some kind of detail. I'm happy so far with the 5W30, but may switch to 0W40 if I feel appropiate for my enviroment in Annapolis, MD.
i put mobil 1 5w-30 in my titan last month..i figure because i only put on about 7,000 miles ayear synthetic would be better..but i still am going to change it every 3,000 miles which is a bout 6 moonths for me..is this okay ?

With the differences in oil, I wonder why Nissan here in Washington State now use Castro Syth on all their Titan's for every oil change. Good or bad, I have 30,100 miles on mine with the Castro in the last 10,000 miles and no problems yet. Maybe going back to conventional oil is really best, hard to say.

Tried Mobil 1 once. I will never put it in again. No change in performance or mpg. After I have no more free oil changes from the dealer I will be using MotorCraft synthetic blend with the nissan filter.

Excellent, only 3k/6months. You should never have a problem with that. Sleep well.

I have a synthetic oil for you. I brought my truck to my buddy's shop for a tire rotation and oil change while it was on the lift. He recommended that I put synthetic oil in my truck. The recommendation was odd...he recommended Pentosynth 5-30. It is made by Pentosin (for all you european car nuts) which is original fill on all high-end european cars and in the the VW TDI's.
My truck is quieter at idle and my mileage is better than conventional oil provided. I highly recommend it. The only other thing I will recommend is to use a genuine Nissan Filter because of the filtration capacity...it is much higher than the usual after market filters (Fram, Purolator, Bosch) and the cost is about the same as the current aftermarket filters. Food for thought.
I think this is a great thread, especially for a new owner like myself. But even after reading all 11 pages I still havn't been able to figure out what I should use for my trucks first oil change (1,500 miles). After reading about shavings and what not in the oil from the break in process i'd like to get it switched out.
Go with some tried and true oil like chev supreme "dino" oil or 5w30 mobil one and be done with it.

I'm about to run to 20K on my odometer and I've been running Mobil One 5W-30 the whole time. No problems, engine seemed to run a lot smoother when I initially switched it to the synthetic, fuel economy improved slightly, but I drive like an idiot so I'm averaging 11mpg anyway. Gotta love smokey burnouts

Yeah, I spent some time reading about oil and I'll summarize everything I know:
First, I don't know that much, but people here do: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ If you want more information than you could ever possibly read...go there.
Now, here is what I haver surmised:
Mobil 5w30 is highly regarded for our truck. MobilOne 0W40 was tried by Jetech with great results, but it is not Manuf. spec so use at own risk. Personally, I don't see the risk reward benefit of going 0w40 but I'm a rule follower when it comes to engines.
Other highly touted synthetics: Royal Purple & Amsoil. Personally, I veer away from Amsoil only because many people who speak on it are selling it. I'm skeptical and so I always shun away from salesman. That said, people who have tested Amsoil have had good results. (Too each their own right)
If you want to go with good ol' fashioned oil (aka dino oil) it looks like chevron supreme is the way to go (5w30). That said, if I'm going with dino oil, I'm changing every 3k miles and done with it. I don't care the brand.
As far as oil filters: WIX, Nissan, and Purolator-Purone are top rated. Honorable mention for value is Supertech from wallyworld. Supertech were well rated and very cheap.
There are several different mindsets when it comes to changing oil. Depending on your mindset here is my advice:
Too Much Time & Money$ Route: Mobil1 5W30 with Nissan Filter every 3K miles.
Best route: Get Mobil1 5W30 with WIX, or PureOne Oil filter. Change every 5k.
Cheap Route: Get ChevSupreme 5w30 dino oil and Supertech Oil Filter. Change every 3k.
Lazy Route: "Nissan Dealership, Change my oil."
Dumb as a stump route: "JiffyLube please f**k up my truck and tell me to have things serviced which do not need it... or as you call it, change my oil."
Guess How long Synthetic Oil Lasts Route: Use Amsoil or Mobil1, with a Wix or Pure1 Oil Filter. Change filter every 5k and add ~ 1 quart of oil with filter change. Change your oil every 20K miles or so. I don't like this route, but some swear this won't hurt your engine one little bit.

I have been using Mobile 1 in all my vehicles for several years now. I put over 100,000 miles on a Jeep Grand Cherokee before I sold it. No problems with the engines at all. None of them ever used any oil. I have always changed oil and filter every 3,000 miles.
At my first oil change, I switched my Titan over to Moble 1. A time came when I did not drive the Titan for a week (I'm retired, remember). When I started it up for the first time, there was more engine noise than I have ever heard come from one of my engines. I reached as quick as I could to shut it off, but oil began to pump and stopped the noise before I could actually turn the key.
Maybe there is something to the fact that synthetics do not leave residual oil on engine parts as long as dino oil. Under all other operating conditions, I have not noticed any more noise from the engine of my Titan with synthetic oil as I did with the factory oil.
I don't really know what I will decide to do at future oil changes. I think the synthetic oils have advantages. It did shake me up a bit when I started the engine and heard all that racket. I know I will not let my truck sit for a week without starting it, if I continue to use synthetic oil.

Excellent summary Adaviss. Ive come to exact same conclusions.Trying 0W40 now, doing analysis through Blackstone for at least 5 changes to see if I learn anything.
Interesting observation Retired Dude. Thanks for posting that. Loook for comments on that one!

Don't Beleave some folks who say you can go 20,000 mi. between oil changes with synthetic. Friend of mine did that to his Chevy 350 and at 120,000 mi it had so little compression we could turn it over by hand with the plugs still in. The inside of the valve covers had about a 1/4 in. thick layer of Heavy Hard Sludge. When we got into the pan it was very funny. He was kinda embarressed he fell for that High Mi. hype on syn. oils.
