Ipdm - ecm

I was wondering if anyone here can help me realize if I'm getting ripped off by the service department at my Nissan Dealership.

Nissan Titan - 96000 miles

Last weekend my truck stalled but i was able to get it started. This issue got worse the following days. Anyways the truck died while driving so I got it towed to the dealer and they said that the ECM was bad because they couldn't get an error code. From reading these forums I found out that the issue may be the IPDM. I mentioned that it may be the IPDM. Basically, the next day, the service rep said that the IPDM fried the ECM so they replaced both.

Is this scenario possible? Is there a way I can gaurantee that they replaced the ECM...Is there a manufacture date on the part? These repair are well over $1000 and I feel as if I'm being taken. Any suggestions?

Re: Ipdm - ecm

I have heard of a few IPDM's going bad, but not alot about bad ECU's.

You could ask for both of the parts that were replaced!?!?

Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time,
But always enough time to do it again?

Re: Ipdm - ecm

well $1000 does sound a little steap, i know just the IPDM is around $100, but the ECM i dont know. and unless the wiring is fried or they have to do some major disassembly, replacing both should just involve unplugging the old ones and plugging in the new ones, but no electronics wizzard

Re: Ipdm - ecm

It was just odd they they said that it was going to take 2-3 days for the ECM to get in then less than 24 hours later they said they replaced the ECM and now have to do the IPDM.

Re: Ipdm - ecm

You stated that the dealer said that the IPDM fried the ECM. If that is true, then why would they first replace the ECM without first replacing the Ipdm ? Or replace both at the same time ?

Re: Ipdm - ecm

Very simple solution. Switch the fog relay out for the ecu relay in the IPDM. It takes 15 minutes to take the cover off, remove the IPDM, switch relays and hook everything back up. Start truck up, and drive it around a little bit. If it dies, yeah have dealership change out ECU. If not, get new relay or IPDM. My IPDM cost me $181 out the door. The check to see if the IPDM is broken, free.

He said that he swapped the IPDM from another Titan. I have no doubt that the IPDM is bad. It's just that I don't believe that the ECM was bad.

The dealer is Loughhead Nissan in Swarthmore PA.

Just a heads up to people who own a 2004 Titan, I found the Service Manual on the web at the following link:

Re: Ipdm - ecm

I don't get it... The IPDM costs around $140 and the ECM costs around $495. Are they that difficult to install to justify another $400????

Re: Ipdm - ecm

Odds are it's just the IPDM. I would honestly say just buy that. And install it. Don't have them install it unleses you want to throw away $200 bucks! I installed mine in 15-20 minutes. The hardest part was disconnecting the wireharnes (some ahve pressure points, some have tabs)

Re: Ipdm - ecm

The IPDM is nothing more that fuse and relay station. I don't think it can fry anything. The IPDM is about $120 and is a simple change out. Whats done is done and who knows they might be right. Did you keep the old ECU?? If you have it you have a nice toy for flashing. Send that baby off to Uprev.

I'll chalk this up as a very expensive life lesson.

Thanks for all the links & advice.

Another word of advice.... Get AAA www.aaa.com redirect. One Tow trip or lockout call will pay for itself within that year.
