Hi everyone. I just found this site and already found lots of great info regarding my questions about the Titan. I was looking at F-150s (very nice effort by Ford but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from a P.O.S. Ranger I had back in 1986) but I am drawn to the Titan by that sweet engine!! Does anyone know if you have to run premiun fuel in it? The salesman I'm working with says regular is ok but the sales brochure says "premium required".My wife's 04 Maxima 6spd. calls for premium but will run good on midgrade. Premium gas here in SE Wis. is going for $1.98 or so a gallon so this could be expesive! Any thoughts or comments on this?

I think Nissan did us a favor by recommending regular gas and plain ole dino oil for the Titan. In my region premium fuel is 10 cents more per gallon. Synthetic oil is $3.00 a quart more. So, Titan owners save $2.80 per fill up and $21.00 per oil change.
Great info everyone. Briarman,the thread you directed me to was perfect.If I'm not mistaken,the compression ratio on the Ford 5.4 and Nissan are almost the same. As long as it doesn't ping, it should be ok. We've had 3 Maximas and they all been bullitproof!! Sooo.... it's time to go out to the garage and kiss my 97 Dakota goodby.

This is my own personal opinion but I think the fact that the new F-150 only calls for regular unleaded could have lead Nissan to lower their fuel standard as well. Remember, they both went back and forth with towing capacity for awhile as well. They might have felt that by calling for premium, they may lose some potential customers.
I have a friend who purchased an '03 Altima and his manual recommends premium for that vehicle.
Anyway, I will probably use regular unleaded predominantly with premium once every few tankfuls. Again, this is just my opinion on the matter.
I remember back in November Just by chance, I was lucky to run into a Nissan rep. at one of my local dealers. I was really excited to see the truck for the first time he was there for salesamans training demontrations prior to vehicle release (and he also let me drive the truck ). I asked him....How much Hp the motor has? I had read in mags that it was going to match the Hemi. He told me that the motor is detuned and that they can easily raise the HP by 40 to 60hp more by way of variable valve timing and computer reprogramming to a higher octane or refuel mapping. They are designed to run on regular gas because that's what this market dictates. He said that they will keep pace with all other manufacturers or lead when it comes to HP and Torque. So basically, the 305hp is a conservative starting point and designed to run on regular gas.

I would strongly encourage you to stay with the 87 octane. Running premium fuel in an engine specifically tuned to run regular can take years off the life of the motor. Years ago, I found out the hard way. I used to always think that the premium was the better gas. but I was wrong! I ruined a motor by running the wrong fuel. Premium is slower burning fuel meaning it doesn't ignite as quick. When the motor is not tuned to run this type of fuel and you do, what happend is you end up with excessive carbon build up from unburned fuel! The engine cannot burn all the fuel up and over time it starts to ping and it's all down hill from there! At most I would go to mid grade if you're worried about it.

Thanks Deepwater. Maybe I will do just that; use mid-grade once every couple of months. I was just going based on the fact that I had an '89 Isuzu pick-up truck that called for regular and I used premium the whole time I owned it and it never gave me a problem. I eventually sold it to a friend with 150,000 miles on it. I saw it running around my area last year some time (my friend sold it) so I think its gotta have at least 200,000 miles on it by now because I sold it 6 years ago.
Either way, thanks for the info and I plan on sticking with regular unleaded.
