Fifth wheel hitch

I got hold of a silver Titan, not yet paid for. When I took it to the RV place to have the hitch moved from my Dodge, I was told that the hitch I needed was one of the sliders. I went home and did a lot of measuring and they are right, the box is too short. Then the PullRite company flat out said their hitch would not work in the Titan. An RV company (sales) said it would. I ended up, at this point, telling the salesman at Nissan that if he could get the slider properly mounted in the truck, that I would buy the truck and the hitch. I may have to wait until 2005 to get a truck with an 8 foot bed. I don't want a Dodge. Anybody know if the PullRite sliding hitch, the one designed for the Tundra can be installed in the Titan KC bed? This is a beautiful truck and I will be disappointed if I have to pass it up, but I can't use a truck that won't haul my 26' Wanderer. Al in Benson, AZ

Ask these guys. They seem to know quite a bit about towing and I've seen Titan posts on here in the past....

I am currently driving a Toyota Tudra Access Cab - with a "Hitchhiker" 5th wheel hitch in back - The Titan should have no problem taking the hitch as their bed is longer than the Tundra! I just measured the distance from the forward rail to the cab on the Tundra and will use the same measurement to install the hitch in my Titan!

Thanks, the PullRite slider is designed for the Tundra, so I agree it should fit the Titan. I don't know how it connect to the frame underneath the truck bed. The Titan has a box frame, I suspect the Tundra has a channel frame. Might just make the difference. Since it is a holliday, I have not heard back, maybe tomorrow.

Just returned from the dealer that insalled my Hijacker 5th wheel hitch on my Tundra {they actually removed the hitch today for installation in my new Titan} I did not have a slider - just a double tilt - however I told him about the "Box style" frame on the Titan and he said he had already ordered the new brackets for installation on Titan trucks when he was in Las Vegas last week. Said he ordered from Husky. By the way i never had any problem with handling the trailer using this hitch, and I did not have the "slider"

Interesting as the Tundra bed is a bit shorter than the Titan. Let us know how the installation goes. My dealer checked with Nissan and they said the warranty would be voided if I installed the PullRite hitch as it was not yet "approved". My kingpin sticks out in front of the trailer so I would think it would work, but the measurements I made showed about a 6" overlap of the cab and trailer at 90 degrees of turn. What size fifth wheel are you towing?

I tow a 28 foot Jayco 5th wheel - dry weight 6,850 lbs - pin weight 1150 lbs.

Maybe this will help - taken from Air-Hitch's newsletter.
The installation instructions give the exact location of where to install the fifth wheel trailer hitch for optimal towing. With an eight foot wide fifth wheel trailer, Reese and Draw-Tite recommend a distance of 52" from the cab of the truck to the center of the fifth wheel hitch. Because the hitch must remain in front of the rear axle, long bed full size trucks are recommended. Any truck with a bed less than 8 feet long is considered a short bed.

If a short bed truck is going to be used, a Slider, along with an extended pin box, is recommended to help compensate for the reduced turning clearance. Without the slider or pin box extension the trailer can strike the cab on sharp turns. The Slider allows the vehicle to make normal turns during low speed maneuvering more comfortable. The extended pin box (minimum 13") creates even more space between the truck cab and the trailer.

A Slider?

When towing a fifth wheel trailer on the highway, the trailer king pin must be between the cab of the truck and the rear axle. This makes maneuvering a trailer around a narrow camp site with a short bed truck very difficult. The slider locks in place between the cab and the rear axle for highway towing. However, when maneuvering around narrow spaces, the slider can be released, moving the hitch and therefore the king pin 10" closer to the tailgate. The greater space between the cab and the trailer allows for greater turning clearance.

Went into the dealership today to take some measurements off my new Titan LE prior to having the 5th wheel hitch installed. I measured from the rear of the cab to the centre of the rear wheels and got about 42". the same measurement on my Tundra is only 32" , that is great for the hitch installation!

I think you are going to push the limits with the tongue weight of your trailer . The payload for the KC Titan is 1508 ( Max. Payload).Deduct the tongue weight of your trailer from the payload and that would be how much cargo ( including hitch) or passengers you could legally carry.. The Titan is a great truck but I do not think it was designed to tow a fifth wheel. I think the weight is more of a issue rather than the length of the bed. sorry for the bad news.
