Adding Navigation?

Hey there,

I was curious if I could add navigation to my KC SE? I know some dealerships online will start to put their parts catalogs on to order from, and i was considering trying this mod. What about any aftermarket companys producing mounting hardware to fit a monitor into the space where the factory nav. went?

A lot of companies have navigation units with seprare displays. However I doubt (nor have I seen) any aftermarket kits specifically for the Titan. You could probably get a local shop to put one in the factory spot for you ($$$$). The new Alpine & Pioneer units with seperate displays look nice.

I Emailed Best kits & Scoche to se if they are coming out with stereo install kits for the titan. Best kits said "not at this time". Scoch has not replied.

Frankly, I don't know why anyone would want to pay what Nissan charges for a 2nd rate navigation system. It does look nice but for a Garmin iQue can be had for about $400 US and does a better job of routing, is portable, and is also makes a damn fine PDA.

If you are talking about the Factory Nav. then you must consider two things. First, I belived that you must have the R/F option! Second is the cost! $2200 dollars is way to much, and I don't think your gonna find one in the junk yard anytime soon. A much better way to go might be to mount a Garmin Street Pilot in the same area. The new model comes with a touch screen and remote. The only drawback with the "handhelds" are the limited memory for maps. I use a Compaq Ipaq and a $20.OO travelmate gps reciver from Radio Shack. Good luck and post some pics of whatever you do!.

If you want the exact same nav system, but adding a touch screen, go to magellen.com. They have 2 models. One that uses CF and one that has a hard drive. I have the Compact Flash version, I would STRONGLY recomend this one. It is fantastic. It also fits in the dash where the original nav system fits all I did was add velcro to hold it in place.

woah, no replies for like a month, and then i get 5! thanks alot for the input!

I use a laptop with a gps reciever right now, but i was looking for more of a flush look. I was hoping someone would produce a mounting solution for a stand alone monitor, and then add nav. through that!. I will def. let all ya know what I decide.

I love this truck!

alpine and panasonic make 2 different touch screen enabled nav systems, that both use the magellen software underneath. The run around 2K, and are installed with gyroscopes, and an attachment to the transmission speed sensor. These items provide guided navigation during times when the sat.'s are not being received well enough for navigation.

Sorry, I was in HI last month so I missed your first post. If you have questions please feel free to PM me. I researched all of them then settled for the Magellen 700. I wanted something that I could take from vehicle to vehicle.

The eclipse AVN unit looks sweet! But it would probably be a pain to install, until someone comes up with a double DIN kit for the Titan.

What is wrong with the factory Nav? Is it innacurate? I was contemplating getting it, or getting a portable as you suggested. Aren't some of the options you get routed through the nav unit...tire pressure, reverse sonar... Is the unit that bad? I know I can get all this stuff aftermarket, but I will loose the integration of a factory unit. I am all confused now

IMHO The nav system is excellent. I have it in my maxima.

I just did not want to spend that much on the extras. Yes you do get a lot of little things, but I am afarid of damage to the unit while using it as a truck.

That is why I did not purchase it.

Yeah, I wish that there was a LE on the lot when I bought the truck. They worked me a deal on the SE with Power captain and RF, so i had to "settle" for it. lol, I love it anyways!

I don't know very much about the Nissan navigational system but I do know a fair bit about the one Lexus uses and it is regarded as perhaps the best in the industry. The built-in systems do a better job in a few areas such as dead reckoning and inertia calculations (when a GPS signal is not available) but for just about every other navigational feature they are not as good as the higher end portable units from Garmin or Magellen. Map updates are very important and a lot of automotive GPS systems aren't updated very often or offer much detail outside of the continental US. Map updates also tend to be very pricey. Having used mapping GPS units for about 5 years now, I'd be very unhappy with a system that I couldn't add my own waypoints to or use off-road.

Hey Doghouse;

Are you talking about the Roadmate? I tried mounting one with a suction mount from gpscity.com but that flat half moon surface where the factory version is, only held for about a half hour.

Would appreciate any tips or expierence you have about mounting a unit in this area since the unit can't survive in that little cutout with all the G forces during acceleration and turns. I have already started reading the service manual and messing around with the dash panels but I would rather avoid that.

I have the Garmin Street pilot 2610 with the touch screen and its a fine machine indeed. Only problem I have found using it is that when I park I have to carry the damn thing with me all the time which is kind of a pain... So while I love it, I think I will be ordering the sat nav package as a part of a deal for my new truck...

This is one of the nicest new units to have everything possbile built in.There is a 20gb harddrive built in. Has navigation and the ability to play almost everything and if you havent heard eclipse sound they have won best head unit in sound for many years and you'll love it. Then again for this you have to wait for someone to make a kit for the console. but its what im looking at for the head unit. Btw it has a option for even a rear camera system, and navigation uses both gps and speed tracking map location.
