Full size spare

Any one notice the spare?
What I mean is, I crawled up under there a couple days ago and was pleasantly surprised. I knew it was supposed to be a full sized spare, but I figured I'd see some big ugly steel rim. Not the case! It's an actual full size factory aluminum rim to match the rest! Obviously, that wasn't necessary, but it's a nice touch.

Well then, one more tire to add to the mix when doing tire rotations. But then I see in another thread that Nissan recommends not including the spare in the rotation. Strange.

I noticed that at the dealer when I picked up my truck and was pleasantly surprised as well.

I got new tires this weekend and they also pointed out that my spare had the tire pressure monitor sensor as well...I thought only the 4 mounted wheels came with that so I was pleasantly surprised. The metal valve stems are cool too!

Probably would be a good idea to get the spare lock since it's nice.

Sure would be nifty if the pressure monitor would 'tell' you if the spare was low..

Here is the scoop on why not to us the spare tire in rotation.

The tire pressure warning system can only "learn" and monitor 4 tires at a time. When the spare is installed, the low tire pressure warning system doesn't understand where the fourth tire went, or what this strange new tire is, and will let you know by flashing light that there is a problem. The remaining original three tires will not be monitored either. You must take your truck to a Nissan dealer to have the system reset.

If you have new tires mounted, and put the same four rims back on the road, the monitor system will still function without being reset.

Some general info on the operation/specifications of the Low Tire Pressure Warning System:









Every Titan has a Low Tire Pressure Warning System. The Low Tire Pressure Warning System will warn the driver (by way of a 10 second buzzer and a light on the instrument cluster) if any tire pressure falls below 28psi. Some Titans come equipped with a monitoring system which displays individual tire pressures as well.

The Low Tire Pressure Warning System must be reset after replacement of a low tire pressure warning transmitter, BCM or tire rotation.

Reading through the service manuals, it appears that there is no way for the end-user to re-initialize the system.

That means that I can't change out my own wheels/tires in my garage and have an active Low Tire Pressure Warning System. Even if I have a second set of OEM wheels/tires, each with their own internal pressure transmitter, I have to go to the dealer to have the system relearn the sensors.

The local dealership tells me that there is no way to perform sensor ID registration without their special tools.

Calling 1.800.NISSAN.1 and speaking with the new vehicle information department in Texas (option 3), the only resident Titan specialist (named Mike) tells me that there is a way to do this manually, but he does not know it.

Calling 1.800.NISSAN.1 and speaking with the Consumer Affairs division in California, I'm told that they'll get back to me...

Isn't this interesting. Every time you rotate your tires you'll have to visit a dealer to reset the tire pressure sensor. Seems like a good scheme for the dealers to make some extra $$.

Only if you include the spare in the rotation. Rotating the four on the ground is not a problem for the system and you do not have to get it reset.

The owner's manual says not to use the spare for rotation for this reason.

thanks for the info kingtitan, thats a relief that i dont have to pay up to nissan everytime i rotate em.

replacement stock tire 280/70/17 is about $190+tax (if you can find it)...
so is nice to see the full size rubber, under...
