Leaking Axle Seal. . . how far can I drive?

One day before vacation (road trip), I find out that my driver-side rear axle seal is leaking. Must've just started in the last couple of weeks cause I just changed my oil and it wasn't leaking then.

How safe is it to drive? If safe, how far? I know it probably depends on how fast it leaks, but if it's isn't streaming out, I think I would be good for some miles.

Thanks!

Nope, no pics. . . . yet! It's an '05. 138k. Not too many problems since new, but this one fo'sure. It's just bad timing with the planned vacation. Don't know what to do.

One thought, since the axle vent becoming clogged seems to be the root cause of this issue, would it help to take the little metal cap off the vent? I took it off to see what is going on down there. Under the cap is a light spring and a round flat piece of soft plastic (almost rubber), like a penny, just smaller. The spring applies pressure against the plastic "penny" against the axle vent. Inside the vent, nothing. Stuck a small pick in there and nothing.

Don't run it with the vent removed. Get a new one, or do the mod.

I personally would do the vent mod if it were me. I've had no problems with my seals since I've done the mod. As for the leak, its really kinda hard to tell you if its unsafe without seeing it. My axle was just kinda wet around the seals, but it wasn't dripping on the rims or anything like a few I've seen. If it is just a little wet, then you should have no problems. Heck, I drove for probably 10K miles before I got my seal fixed.

How much did it cost to have the seals replaced?
