Question Ouch

I notice you are using the locking receiver pin on your ball mount. Is that what you were using at the time?

You probably have a paintless dent repair place in your area.....i am sure it will probably cost you about 100 or so and they can usually hammer those right out.....its cheaper than replacing the whole bumper...

Which came first, the locking pin or the dents?

I really don't understand how losing your receiver pin caused those dents. If your pin came out while you were moving foward wouldn't your trailer hitch just hit the ground? If you were backing up it seems like nothing would happen. Those dents look like they were caused by jackknifing while backing your trailer up because they look equally spaced on each side.

One bad thing about pins that lock: it is more difficult to determine if it is secured because you can't check it visually. My lock had warnings all over the package to be sure to check that it is locked before towing anything. They must have had some legal issues I suspect.

On my other truck I had, stupid me, backed up with my utility trailer attached with the tailgate down and it caused a big dent on the top edge of the right side of my tailgate when I jackknifed it into the jack. This is why you see dents on the top edge of tailgates on other trucks you see going down the road.

BTW, the sticker you have on your ball mount is peeling up and starting to look a little bad. It is meant to be peeled off because it comes off easy and has the load capacity data stamped into the metal underneath the sticker.

Sorry guys, I haven't seen this post in awhile. So here are the answer to your questions.

1. They are almost symetrical, New bumper cost $429.00 plus installation.

2. I bought a pin from Walmart that has a clip type lock, If you notice how the chains mount right next to the pin. Guess the chains rubbed the clip allow it to come out.

3. The trailer that I was pulling at approx 50 mph slammed into the back of the bumper (twice)! I was able to get off into the grass allowing the tounge and reciever to drag slowing it down without taking any more damage. Happen at 2:30am! I had to walk around in the dark looking for the damm pin so that I could travel the additional 80 miles.

I highly suggest that anyone pulling a trailer use a locking pin. If you have the clip type use a lock with it!
