Hid's, awesome!

Just got my 9006 retrofit kit, and installed it tonight! I had a car with hid's that I traded in for the Titan, and this just brings it to that level!

I took a ton of pics and will be doing a write up very very soon.

Here's a teaser, HID is on the right in the picture (driver's side) and stock light on the other. Also installed are the fogs that I put in last night. You can see how much whiter the hid's are!

Is this a true HID? Or is it a superwhite bulb replacement? If it is a bulb replacement, is there any addition heat from the bulb to be concerned with?

Thanks, Ken

It's a true hid kit with ballasts. Not cheap bulbs. I won't do cheap bulbs cause they can actually reduce light on the road.

Here's another teaser, ballast with 3m tape ready to go into a sweet spot on the titan!

Does the kit come with a new lens? Have you had anyone "flash" you yet? Since HID's are so much brighter, they require a specially shaped reflector to limit the vertical dispersion so you don't blind on-coming drivers. Also keep in mind that you could also get a ticket since HID's aren't available as an OEM option.

I don't mean to be so negative about this and I'm not attacking your decision to install these lights. I just want people to be educated before going out and spending a big load of money.

I agree with your statement further down about the gimmick of "superwhite" bulbs that appear blue or purple. They are purely aesthetic and in most cases have less light output than the equivalent wattage halogen. There are other bulbs that also are called superwhite that appear "white", and these can make a difference depending on the reflector design. I went with a 55W "superwhite" bulb that has a very light purple coating. The light appears white with absolutely no purple or blue color tinge, and has improved my lighting somewhat, perhaps more because of the wattage difference (55W vs. 51W stock) than the color difference. For my high beams I went with a clear 100W bulb. Since my high beams are on for only short period of times, I'm not concerend about the heat.

All non-oem kits are for off-road use only. You will find that disclaimer everywhere... well maybe not for cheap hid kits on ebay.

The 9006 adapters put the light source at the proper position for use with the stock headlights.

You are correct, there is no oem-hid option, so no oem-hid-headlight. I don't even think hid is an option on the armada.

I got my kit from http://www.proxenon.com . The kit I received was actually a Hella kit. Friend of mine ordered an H4 kit at about the same time, and he got the Hellas, too.

FWIW, mine is the 6500k.

QX56:
"These High Intensity Discharge (HID) xenon headlights are lit by an electric arc through inert xenon gas. Brighter than halogen headlights, these precisely aimed lenses cast a wide, defined beam to illuminate the road ahead with exceptional clarity. Driver-adjusted angle helps maintain the proper beam-height regardless of vehicle payload"

You will also need a new hood, bumper and fenders if you are going to fit them to a titan. Good luck!

syntrix,

Went to the website you posted. Now I'm really confused, which 6500k kit did you purchase. For I saw several 6500k kits, each one was in a different series. Please post your part number, and a link directly to that item. Thanks

Why did you choose the 6500k and not the higher models? For the few extra dollars the lights could have been that much brighter.

Ok, for some reason I can't reply on an older netscape on solaris (Im in more training this week).

This is the kit I purchased:

http://www.proxenon.com/add_cart_frm.php?product_id=10

The color range is really your preference. Here's a great FAQ on HID's:

http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/hl-hid-bulbs.htm

Silverstars aren't that bad for a halogen!!!

Hmmm, maybe I should buy a radar detector instead. I want fewer tickets, not more.

With a powerful V8 under the hood, you will want a radar detector anyway! Regardless, as this is disclaimer-ville, radar detectors may be illegal for use in your state or area.

Working on the write-up this evening.
