Question Thin Mount Subs, are they worth anything?

Hello all.
I just got done installing new MB Quart speakers in the doors. Now I am on to the Sub.

Has anyone had any experience with these thin mounting depth Subs?

I havent found a place that has them set up so I can audition them. So I am curious if anyone has and has an opinion of them. My goal is one 10" under the seat, I am not looking to bump just looking for some decent low bass to go with my nice Highs and Mids.

I have the Earthquake 10" shallow mount......

Here is my experience....

Being that I have designed and built LOTS of subs through the years I found this to be interesting....I bought one to give it a try not knowing what to expect. I built all three of their recommended enclosers and found that the only one that even comes close to sounding good was the ported one @ .8 ft^3.

Sooooo......I brought out the old testing equip and measured the t/s paramters myself to see what enclosure size is REALLY needed. I found that a 1 ft^3 ported is as small as you can go for ported and a .7 seems the best for sealed.

Once you have the enclosure nailed down the sub sounds fantastic!! It hits VERY hard and low with almost zero out of cab thump...

Have fun!

Pioneer 12" Shallow Mount sub

I have pioneers 12" shallow mount sub underneath my drivers seat and all I can say is that I am very impressed with it. It recommends .7 cubes but I only have .4 with some polyfill. You are not going to shake the car next to you but you will really feel the bass. Sound is great. Pictures of the Sub under Drivers Seat

I tried the Pioneer first and quite frankly there is NO comparison bewteen the Earthquake and Pioneer......The Earthquakes outperform the Pioneer HANDS down it isnt even a fair fight. The two test's were between the Pioneer 12 and Earthquake 12 both in the recommended factory sized enclosures. The Earthquake sounds much smoother and plays quite a bit lower. Both were sealed @ .8 ft^3.

I chose the 10" over the 12 because I was thinking I could put it under the seat. After trying several different sized test boxes it just didnt sound good enough for me until I hit about .8 ft^3 and ported. I ended up @ 1 ft^3 tuned @ 35 hertz and it sounds real real good.

the best bar none shallow mount sub if you can find one is the phase linear aliante SI 10" or 12" (very expensive though). the next in line is the Illusion audio 10" or 12". as folks have said before if you want a shallow mount, you will need to give it a lot of space for optimum output. I have heard the pioneer, and earthquake, and while they will work in as small as .04 cu ft like russell--to hit the real low end sub sound you need more like 0.7-1 cu ft. but if you do not listent to very bass heavy rock, or hip hop then the smaller box will be fine I have tried like three iterations

1)stock sub--sucks
2) had a Illusion-needed more air space than under the front seat woudl allow-but very accurate and clean
3) two resonant enginnering 8 "(which actually sound the best under the front seat using only 0.45 cu ft
3) I will be trying two jl 8w6 on firday when they arrive

after doing it so many times and three boxes--I say maybe one higher end 8" woofer under the front seat down firing if you have the box talent (since all the real low bass notes will rattle the metal under the seat and can become annoying)

or just get two tens, or two 8's under the rear seats l

or one shallow sub behind the rear seats--but this will require some fiberglass work though

good luck

those blaukpunkts are alomost impossible to find though--belive I tried for like two months--you can get the earthquakes from http://www.savinglots.com/home.asp
If you do go earthquake Id highly recommend the sws12 as it has a much heavier magnet, and higher power rating, and sound more like a true sub than the the sws10--which is more like a filler bass, not real bottom

and the illusion are not made anymore but you cna get them used of ebay every now and then, and the aliantes same thing ebay is the only way as they are made in europe (but they are sooo worth it)

Thanks for the info Smoke!
Let me know how those 8s work out. A friend of mine wants me to use a couple of JL 10s he has. Not sure what model or how old they are but it might be better on the wallet then the Aliante. But for 10 to fit under the rear seats I have a feeling it will be kinda pushing it volume wise.

I have a blaupunkt dealer right down the street from me and would be happy to put you intouch with them if you or anyone else is interested. I think the 10" was $250 and I didnt catch the cost for the 12" but figure retail.
I decided I would get some feedback before jumping in at that price...

man those 10's will fit under the seat easy--you can get about 0.7 cu ft per side if you build the box right

if you check those blaukpunkts out, I am dying to hear how they sound--no one I know has heard them yet. 250 seems alot for the ten though. if you really wnat to go shallow you can get the eartquake sws12 from 179 from savinglots if they still have them in stock--no warranty though so be careful.

which jl 10' are they??

Dont know, He is away on vacation will be back this weekend. He had them in his Mustang and is a profesional sound man, so I bet they are decent and in good shape. He could never get them to sound right in his mustang.

How do you like the MBQ's and what models did you get?

I just ordered the Premium 6.5 components (PCE 216) for the front doors and the Premium 6.5 mid/bass (PCE 164) for the rear. I'm going to push them w/ a 4-channel RF Power Amp (550S) and 2 Premium 10"s (400rms each) pushing them w/ a RF Power T10001BD Mono Amp. Running all Lightning audio caps, wires and connectors. This bad boy should pound!

They are very nice and I am very happy so far. I have the PCE 216 in the fronts and RCE 216 in the back. I havent quite got things tweaked how I want them yet but a lot of that is due to the lack of the sub. A the moment I have the amp crossovers set at 90 Hz and they are very crisp and clear and acurate. I did set the front speaker crossover at -3 to try and minimize the highs being too bright. I instaled the tweaters in the Dash on the front and installed the rears as a co-axial. Yours should sound great.
