i have never understood why all the hype about the ipod....its WAY over hyped....

you can get more space and more battery life for 1/2 the cost....not to mention its made by apple.

I have a dell DJ.....i researched mp3 players for 2-3 months and the dell dj just couldnt be beat.

I agree regarding the Ipod. I fumbled with one for half an hour but couldn't figure it out. Maybe I'm Apple handicapped, but other mp3 players seem to me to be more user friendly.

When it comes to it, other MP3 players can't handle the coolness of an Ipod. The battery life i live with, i can't always have perfection...we'll maybe i do...I do drive a TITAN!!

Matt knows where I stand, but here's my $.02 for the rest of you.

My wife and I bought each other matching iPods for Christmas last year. I LOVE mine. However, all things being equal, I would have gotten the Dell. The reason I insisted on a iPod was that the Dell is not compatible w/ Audible audiobooks. As I commute 1 hr+ each way, I listen to a LOT of audiobooks. That made the iPod a no brainer.

For those with the dell DJ....

Can you guys random accross directories AND within one directory? That is key for me...sometimes I like listening to 1 artist for a while, others I like the whole thing.

Can the same be done with the iPod?

The iPod will shuffle within an playlist, and album, an artist, a genre, or the entire contents, depending on where you begin with shuffle turned on.

Dunno about the Dell.

I've looked in the past (not recently, admittedly) for a program that would rip the audible files to MP3's without success.

Audible format 4 IS MP3, but there is an encryption layer in there that would have to be cracked for a standard MP3 player to be able to do anything with them. You COULD use Audible manager to burn the books to CD, then re-rip those to MP3, but that's a LOT of work. For instance, I'm currently listening to the last book in Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series. It is in 4 parts, each of which is over 7 hours long. It would take a full day to convert this to MP3 by the CD method.

Now, if there's a ripper program available...

Dan

After a lot of research...

I just got the IRiver H340. Flash it with Korean model firmware and you can watch MPG video.

Searching the forums to figure out how to amplify the aux port. I want to hardwire this thing in. It sounds terrible (lack of volume) through the aux port.

It blows away the ipod. The ipod is good but mostly corporate marketing hype.

I'm getting the Sony NW-E99 1GB for X-mas. It's under the tree, and the wife won't let me touch it till tommorow.

Had a minidisc but she stole it for the gym.
