Just received the iPod (20gig) for xmas. So far, so good. Love the iTunes store! Got the iTrip FM thingy (technical term) so I can play it through my radio at work.

Go with the iriver H320 or H340. Beats the heck out of the ipod on features and versatility. Plug in to a usb port and computer instantly recognizes it as a hard drive (H300), then simply drag and drop files to it (no need for awkward and buggy software). Also, view pictures on the color screen (can also, so I've read, play movies with a firmware upgrade, if that is your thing). Finally, view text files, listen to FM radio, use it as a voice recorder, and record music from any device (no computer needed).

Baahh, the Iriver's are nice units but I would prefer sound quality over any of those pointless features (excet for drag & drop, that is nice). What is up with all these new players that can display pictures and play movies? Who would want to watch a 2 hour movie on a 2" screen? I just don't get it. Not flaming at all, just expressing my opinion!
So has anybody attempted any mods to attach the mp3 player into their truck? I just removed the faceplate and placed my mp3 player where the 4x4 controls would be with some cell phone accessories.

Thats becuase microsoft realeased its new media os that runs on these little things. I am going to buy one and I deifintely will watch Tv shows and movies on that tiny screen! Its not bad once you get use to it.
Creative Zen Nomad Xtra....I got the 30GB model for $200, I think that's the price of the 40GB model now. For the space, it can't be beat. Sounds killer as well
I've looked in the past (not recently, admittedly) for a program that would rip the audible files to MP3's without success.
Audible format 4 IS MP3, but there is an encryption layer in there that would have to be cracked for a standard MP3 player to be able to do anything with them. You COULD use Audible manager to burn the books to CD, then re-rip those to MP3, but that's a LOT of work. For instance, I'm currently listening to the last book in Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series. It is in 4 parts, each of which is over 7 hours long. It would take a full day to convert this to MP3 by the CD method.
Now, if there's a ripper program available...

I am planning to get a MP3 player that is Audible compatible. If I buy a MP3 player and plug it into the AUX jack on my Titan, will the MP3 turn on and off when I turn the ignition of my Titan off? Also, will it resume at the same place where it left off? I would like to have a MP3 player that I would never have to touch any buttons while I am listening to a book. The only buttons I want to have to use are the on/off and volume on the steering wheel.
Thanks,
Robert

To my knowledge, nothing you plug into your Aux port will be able to turn on and off with you car. The Aux port is just an input and does not output anything. The closest thing you could get would be an Ipod and an Alpine head unit, and also get the Ipod interface...but that is a lot just to not have to push a button! Most MP3 players will start playing where they left off, like on my Rio Karma, you can decide weather you want to player to start where it left of, or at the beginning of the track.

I hate that Audible encrypts their books in Audible format 4. It is obvious that they are paranoid about people copying their books on MP3 but it sure does make things hard for those folks like me that pay for the service. I put a MP3 compatible CD player in my wife's Mitsu and it is ridiculous to have to burn their stuff to a CD first. This also forces you to buy a MP3 player that is compatible to their encryption. They are stupid for doing things this way.

I have a Creative Nomad 60g & an iPod 40g. Haven't even used the Nomad since I got the iPod. I just got an iPod 20g for the wife. Best all around, considering Apple reliability, software, etc... YOu wont regret getting an iPod.
