Do bazooka tube's actually produce good bass? Like as good as a sub?
They are very efficient, it doesn't take much power for satisfying results. However they lack low bass, in fact I don't know if the specs have changed over the last few years but they used to list their low end deep bass down to 38-39 Hz. A real subwoofer should be down in the 20-25 Hz range or lower. The only other problem is that they are hard to tune as they put out a lot of muddy bass...not very accurate or clear. For best results you would probably want your low pass crossover set at 80-90Hz to help illeviate this problem (for best sound), however this would be at the expense of volume or sound output.
With all that being said, there are better alternatives out there.
You have a lot of better choices then. I would go with a Dayton Titanic 10" for $149-$159 or an Adire Audio Shiva 12" for $125. This would get you under budget and you would still have money left over for box materials and wiring. Then maybe consider one of JBL's mono amps. They aren't the best but for the money are a great value and they are very reliable. You would have a great sounding subwoofer then with lows into the magic 20-25Hz range and very articulate bass...MUCH, MUCH better than anything bazooka (SAS) could ever build.
The adire Audio Shivas need about 2cf per sub in a sealed enclosure to get the best out of each sub...
I want to try one of them, If I could fit 2 12" shivas, that would be better..
Actually for a automotive sealed enclosure, Adire recommends at 25.5 liter box which equals 0.90 cubic feet. See the Shiva's Box Application whitepaper at:
