Sub box question re: PolyFill

I plan on making my own subbox for the CC using (2) 10's and a buddy of my mine has mentioned putting PolyFill inside the enclosure. What are the benefits of having Polyfill in a sub box? How much PolyFill should I use assuming the enclosure's volume is 0.7-0.9 cu/ft?

TIA

Wil

figure 1 pound of polyfill to every 1-1.5 cubic ft.

if your box is built to the proper volume for the sub, you shouldn't need polyfill. i think that's only used when the box is undersized and you want it to "trick" the sub into thinking is in a larger box.

a box that's too small for the sub will result in lower bass frequencies but less of a range, and a larger box than the sub requires will lose the low freq and pick up higher frequencies.

The tech at www.edesignaudio.com told me that it was better to just make the box the right size w/o any polyfill. If you make a small box and use alot of polyfill to compensate, it can create overheating problems for your sub driver.

You should never need polyfill unless the box was poorly designed or you switch to different subs that require a bigger box and you don't have the space to build another box.. I don't use polyfill nor would I ever use it.

Me either but if your like me, I built two boxes 1.2cuft per box for a pair of jl12w3v2's. The space under the rear seats is just too tight for anything larger. The specs say 1.25-1.5 cuft. I want to use the 1.5. So I'll use 1/4-1/2 lb of polyfill to get the 1.5cuft and there will still be plenty of room for heat disapation.

Making this box may take me a few days since 12 hr shifts dont give me enuff free time. I will take exact volume measurements and see what subs i need to use. Id rather opt not using polyfill due to heat. Thanks for the replies fellas

How did you get 1.2 cuft per side? The only way I can come up with over 2 cuft will be with a single(both side) enclosure that will require removing the jack and protruding into the back of the seat area. Also will use fiberglass to get as much space as possible? Is there something I missed? Did you raise your rear seats?

That explains the need for bigger boxes!! Have you guys considered sealed its the way to go for SQ. Sealed boxes do however require more power to operate the subwoofer.
