I emailed CDT to find out what was up with the ED equipment and why it looked so similar to CDT. This is the reply I got.
'We make some product for them
However their items do not compare head to head with any CDT models.
Their product is different, some similar looks because we are using same tooling on some items.

Just thought you'd like to know... I know it doenst matter I was just curious so I'm passing the info along.
and why in the world are you calling bestatchess out like that all in your post title????
the cdt line is really not all that anyway once you go into the higher end lines (Seas, DLS, Scan Speak, Focal, Dyanaudio, Morel). the cdts and subsequently the ed speakers, which are not as far off as they are making itout to be, are cool just not great.
if you are just starting out and not a fanatic then they are cool especially when you get the ed package deals
but cdt are pretty overpriced and ineffiecient (ie they need tons of power)--the ed speakers were designed better in this regard, and the overall tonality is good.
or comparison off 100w Id take the alpine 177r set anyday over the cdt hd series, up that to 150 to 200w the cdt sound better, but still not great
all of the speakers I listed in parentheses will best any of the cdts lines at equal power hands down

Sorry, didnt know it was against the rules to post info like that.
CDT might not be up to the standards of the brands you listed but they also aren't nearly as expensive. Rainbow makes killer stuff if you can afford it, most people cant. Sure, if I could afford a 2k dollar set of speakers I'd be all over them. But since the CDT's offer great bang for the buck then that moves them up in my book.
My point is that with car audio equipment the sky is the limit. The goal is picking what fits your budget and doing the best install that you can. Which will make more of a noticeable difference in the end.
hope you didnt take offense man with the angry face and all, that was not my point.
dude (best...) knows about the cdt realationshsip he posted it many times already
it just wasnt neccesary to put his name all on blast like that since he has been more than helpful to many aftermarket hunters with his picture and all
and Im trying to help you out so you dont have to go theough so many speakers like I did--lol
if you are a average joe car audio person the ed speakers will work fine as long as they are sealed properly, the door is deadened, and the wood baffles is sperated from the metal by foam or something they will sound cool
I had the cdt hd series (there best line below the euro's) and heard the ed, they are not that diffenent (were talking the 6500s series not the 6000)---Im not a tech so Im strying to sell you speakers like the guys from cdt, but its up to you---I bet you couldnt tell the difference if you put them a/b in your truck
if you are really into car audio then I thing you have to step up in cost a little and hit the 300-500 mark for a component set (internet prices)--anything else is overkill unless you are realy into sound
all the stuff I listed except the scans are witin that price range
and yes rainbow stuff is great (I run the tweets and they are niiiiice!!) but the set are way overpriced

I didnt mean any disrespect to best, it wasnt meant to be anything big just something to get his attention. I wasnt aware of how much he did actually know so I posted it anyway, its really not a big deal. I have seen some of his posts and am appreciative as i am sure most people are.
I know that CDT is obviously trying to get me to buy their product. I was only passing the info along as he stated it. I know there are many good brands out there.
Its hard to find a lot of those brands from authorized dealers. I wont spend 3-500 bucks on some speakers without some sort of guarntee. Here in NH we dont have a lot of places that cary the high end stuff. Its hard to know what your getting without actually hearing them for yourself or reading a lot of reviews. Over on the sounddomain page a lot of people talk about different sets. I did get some of my info there and from magazines.
I just want to do a nice clean install that isnt going to cost a fortune but still sound great.
Who knows, they probalby are the exact same... lets see... Rockford, I mean RF/ Panasonic/clarion, is all the same as RF right?? or at least thats what Nissan would like you to believe.
P.S. Bestatchess, I'm sorry if i offended you for putting your name in the subject line...

Nah, doesn't bother me at all, I thought that maybe that was my 15 minutes of fame, per Warhol.
Hopefully I can shed some light on the situation for you guys.
I was a CDT Dealer for quite a long time. As such and selling numerous other brands in the world today. I cut ties for lack of a better phrase with a lot of companies I sold when I opened up Elemental Designs. However becuase we concentrated solely on subwoofers for some time we continued to recommend and shoot people to CDT dealers for equipment. I've always been a fan of the way they do things and the products themselves.
When it came time to develop the eD lines the obvious phone call was to CDT. So in essense we just sort of teamed up. Our offerings are more specific and we do not offer near the options CDT Audio does. We tweaked the designs to work for a range of applications but unlike CDT do not offer a slew of upgrades, and crossovers.
If you enjoy the performance of one you will probably enjoy performance of another. But as Ken eluded to above the main similarities just came from us sharing a few toolings together.
Basically these specific systems get brough at considerable savings becuase we are in fact. Factory direct. However you won't purchase a CDT Audio set from eD, and CDT Audio dealers do not sell eD's set. Becuase we shared some tooling on our crossovers initially (this was a favor to us from CDT) the initial onset was that they were the same thing. While they are similar and tooling is shared they are not the same.
With the new versions of the 6000s and 6500s We have integrated our own crossovers into the system and upgraded a few cosmetics. These new upgraded systems will be shipping within the next 30 days so hopefully you guys should see a little more differentiation between these products.
The situation is very similar to what occured over some time with Arc Audio and Rainbow. Where eventually Rainbow and Arc partnered to create Arc Audios component sets. Pretty much the same thing here with us and CDT Audio.
With this said if there is anything specific I can help you with please feel free to shoot me a email or a phone call. I also added titantalk to our forums discount page on our web site here - http://www.edesignaudio.com/forum_discount.htm
I do not know if anyone here has purchased the updated sets but delivery will be occuring shortly and I'm sure you'll experience a little more product differentiation. I hope you enjoy them as much as we have here!
Thanks for allowing me the oppertunity to maybe clear a few things up.
Smoke - You might also keep in mind many people have different tastes. We've had many customers swap out QSD's, Polykevlars, etc etc with our 6500s set and never look back. We've had people do the same vice versa.
The one thing I think we really help people out with our eDi's especially is we have a return policy that allows you to return a speaker if you don't like it. I don't know of anyone else who does that online anymore. It allows people to listen to speakers and make their own descisions.
There are very few brands left that actually make there own or design there own stuff.. Its the way of the world now days, it comes down to saving money..

Great to have you here Kaosmoon!!! Welcome. I hope you can stick around some. A few of us here are familiar with you and realize that you in fact are an extremely busy man. Many thanks for your input!
I do have one question for you...I would like to essentially put together my own component set using 3rd party drivers (i.e. focal, scanspeak, peerless, morel, etc.). Do you offer x-overs only or do you only sell complete component sets? I wouldn't even know where to begin designing a crossover although I do want a high end component set.

Dman,
Thanks for the warm welcome and the question!
We certainly do sell some of our system parts alone. Like crossovers now and again. We normally do not make a point to sell a lot of them for custom systems. The reason for this is the crossover, slopes, steps, etc etc are designed to extract the top performance out of the speakers in the set. Ie. With some other types of speakers it probably won't work quite the same.
If you would like to feel free to send the drivers you are looking at using with a attachment of the FR of the drivers and impedance curve if possible so I can guage whether or not they will work well for our crossover or not.
The crossover is really the heart of any component system. Having it designed and matched perfectly to the speakers your using can really be a night and day difference between amazing performance and it working just 'good enough'. But we can certainly look into it for you!
If you'd like to e-mail me that information feel free to shoot it over to the address above.
smoke -
Thank you to you as well for the warm welcome. Hopefully see you around icix! I can be found most days there as it's normally on at least one computer in the shop at any given point in the day.
This is a darn nice board you guys got here. <-- I like that one a good deal
Welcome to the forum! Its nice to know that you can actually talk to the person in charge when you want to.
Thanks for the clarification. I had CDT in my previous truck and was doing some shopping around and was told about you guys. That's how this all started. I appreciate your input to our forum and your discount is very generous.
One question I have is about your 6500 series comp set. I see a spot for tweeter and for an image tweeter. Is the image tweeter crossed over differently (like a CDT image enhancement) or does it just give you the option of running 2?
