if you only have 1k, Id go HU

alpine 9835 ($350 shipped) or pioneer p860mp (300 shipped) or wait unil may when the new alpine glide strip comes out (but it will be around $50 or so so it maybe out of your budget)

front component set
arc audio acs 265, or kicker SS56.2 around $350 shipped

the arcs are smoother, the kickers have a little more midbass

a nice 100x2 amp--like a PG ti 600.2 around 325 shipped

spend 20 bucks on the metra face plate kit and wiring harnesses, 30 bucks on a 4ga 4ch amp kit from knuconceptz.com, 30 bucks for a fused distribution block, 10 dollars for some mdf to make speaker baffels and an amp rack

run the rear speakers off the deck (or get rid of them all together), run the rear speakers of the deck, run the front speakers off the amp

save up to add a sub and amp in the future, and $100 for sound deading material for the front doors

so amp/hu/speakers no more than $1020

accesories wire/fuses/power/wire etc $90

sounddeadening youll neead at least to do the front doors $100

so $210 over budget hows that??

Maybe buy the speakers, speaker wire, MDF, sound deadening and sub(s) and start working on the install & sub box while saving a few more $ for the amps & HU.

Implicit in smoketitan's post is the fact that the OEM RF amp won't drive decent speakers. The stock RF speakers are 2 ohm. So there is no point in replacing the RF speakers w/o getting something that will drive them.

I kept the RF HU to maintain NAV & DVD integration, but there is no savings there over a new HU by the time you buy an LOC and a preamp.

For a limited budget here is my suggestion: Purchase a new HU that is satellite ready, either XM or Sirius - your choice, I prefer XM. You will also need the double DIN bezel from Nissan, a dash kit and wiring harness from Metra.

Disconnect the factory amp and use the front door speakers as is - you can replace them later if you choose. Abandon the rear speakers (leave them in place but do not use) Purchase new 6x9 speakers of your choice plus speaker boxes for same for the rear. The boxes will fit under the rear seat. Power all speakers from the new HU. Run new speaker wires for the new rear speakers.

New HU, dash kit, bezel, connector kit and satellite receiver should cost no more than $500. Speakers and boxes for the rear about $150.

As to choices, I prefer Blaupunkt headunits. Alpine and Kenwood I put in the same category as Monster cables - not bad but way over priced for what you get.

I also prefer the sound coming from the rear rather than the front. Therefore I always fade the front speakers down so the rears dominate. Used as fill the existing front speakers will suffice.
