Red face Getting with the glass

Underway with the fiberglassing...I hate this stuff! But it should look decent once I'm done. Here is one of the design specs pages.

Well, that picture is real small. Here is the details:

20"W X 11.25" D X 8" H (front) 6" H (back)

Clipped corner is 45 deg. Need 22.5 deg miters on each side of the corner. Top of the corner is basically freehand cut with a 10 degree bevel.

Top piece is 1.25" MDF. Top 1/2" rests on vertical pieces while the remaining 3/4" is inset into the box. The top is secured with vertical and horizontal screws and glue. The slope for the top is ~10 degrees...you may have to tweak that angle if you adjust the height of the front or back independent of the other.

Front piece is 16.25" to the corner. Side is 7.75" to the corner. This gives a 45 degree angle.

For the mounting rings, 3/4" MDF cut to 7.25". Inside cutout is 5.6". Then routed out for a 6.75" total opening with .25" depth. Tweeter ring is just 2.25" Round with a 1.6" hollowing to a depth of 0.6". All these are secured to the box with 3/8" hardwood dowels sank 3/8" into both the box and the rings. The main ring is secured by 4 dowels with lengths from 2.5" down to 1". The tweeter is secured with a single dowel on the outside then brad nailed to the main ring. Be sure to get you angle the way you want it before you nail it. Also be sure to use glue in every joint, and dowel hole.

More to come. Enjoy!

Biggest reason...I like a full, complete sound stage and have found that with an 8" sub and the Momo speakers I already have, I end up with a lot of mid-bass and not much else. I've tried EQ-ing the system as much as I can, but it just seems to go from mid-bass to twang.

So adding two solid tens provide the low end that the single 8 can't, the Momo components have great mid-bass and definition up front, The Momo's in the rear doors sort of provide a supportive fill, the eDi 6000's are not known for mid-bass - more mid-range which is where I need the sound reinforcement. I am a little worried that the eDi tweeter will be a bit harsh and the crossover does not allow for attenuation. If that's the case I'll just tweak it by rotating the cup away.

On top of all this, I just thought it would look really sharp...especially with black to red irridesent paint.

Parts have arived!!

The eDi 6000 component set arived today. These look even better than the pre-production pics. Problem 1...the diameter of the set is slightly larger than the specs posted on Elemental Designs web. OK, so I do a little sanding and take off .25" more on the ring. That done, they look perfect in the pod. No pics yet, starting to bondo then I'll place and take some pics.

I would be interested in hearing that setup.. The sound stage in a truck sucks anyway you slice it but it would be interesting to hear it..

Test fit the components

I'm almost complete with the bondo stage. Thought I'd test fit the component eDi 6000s.

Can't see the pics in your last two post! What I can see thus far looks very nice...wish I could do that kind of work! Question...are the component mids sharing the same air space as the sub?

Not at all. I took a small section out of the sub box (~3" X 6") by building another box (actually an L and used the front and side of the sub box) and built the ring suspended above that section. By taking out that portion of the sub box, I reduced the net volume to 0.6 ft^3 which, acording to eD is perfect for the 11KV2's (If they ever get here). I have a scan of the plan earlier in this post that shows how that was done.

Primed and ready for paint

Ok guys, the priming is done and wet sanded. Ready to get painted. I'm probably going to regret getting complicated on the paint but it sounds soooo cool: Iridescent Candy Apple Red (2-3 coats), Transparent Black (~5 coats), UV protectant Clear (4-6 coats). I've never done anything like this so we'll see how it goes.

What do you think of the banana plugs for the component set? I decided to not run the wires through the back (through the sub area) and came up with the idea of inserting a couple of these. The wires will come up through the amp rack and will not be visible except for the portion that is plugged in.

I noticed several areas to touch up on after the first coat of primer. Good thing it was found out now rather than later.

I'll keep posting as I go along. Thanks for the tip too.
