Re: Radio Mute Wire

From what I can decipher from the AV SM, is that there is no individual mute wire. The HU uses a RX/TX two wire setup between it and the face plate and the only functions with their own wire are the Eject and Load buttons.

Re: Radio Mute Wire

There is a wire going to the RF amp (I believe from the HU) - It is called AMP ON. Breaking this wire kills the amp. I used a relay with the mute signal from my Parrot bluetooth to break this wire, which "mutes" the radio. Here is the detail from the SM It's wire 9.

Re: Radio Mute Wire

Now that's pretty clever. Good thinking.

Re: Radio Mute Wire

I used a relay with an IC timer to mute the radio. The way I did it was to build a circuit that takes the mute signal from the Parrot (or any other muted bluetooth) and throws the relay momentarily. The output of the relay is soldered across the 'mute button' on the control head of the radio panel. When the signal goes to mute, the system acts as if I hit the mute button manually. When the system returns to normal, the relay again shorts the pushbutton on the panel momentarily and unmutes the system. Works pretty good.... All Radio Shack stuff and cost about $14.00 and my time.

Re: Radio Mute Wire

so how do i do this? i wouldnt consider myself a beginner when it comes to installing car stuff i would consider myself a novice. what is the easiest way for me to do this? can i just tap into the wire which comes from the mute button on the HU? or is there a specific wire i need to find

thanks

Re: Radio Mute Wire

There is no wire from the mute button. mhwo soldered onto the circuit board. To use the AMP ON wire like I did, you can find the wire in the bundle from the RF amp (behind the gas pedal). The bundle comes out towards the front of the dash. This is where I was able to locate the wire.

Re: Radio Mute Wire

To clarify a little, when u push the 'mute/pause' on the front panel, you are closing a switch that goes through a logic circuit that turns the audio down/off. It is not a switch like when turning a room light on and you need to be careful how you use it so as not to damage the circuit board or circuits on the panel. In essence, I use the mute signal (which is ground) on the car kit to complete a circuit to a relay (Radio Shack) and it acts like me pushing the mute on the radio. The trick is not to have the switch constantly on. That's why I use a circuit that triggers the relay for only 1/2 second.

Re: Radio Mute Wire

mhwo - any chance you would share a parts list and/or schematic of your mute button solution?

Its an easy build, but if its something you have never done before, it may be a pain. Here is the schematic.

All parts available at Radio Shack. Where the switch is indicated on the schematic, put the mute out wire from the phone. Take an output from the relay and solder the 2 leads across the mute switch on the front panel. I used a Radio Shack relay. It's a 12vdc miniature DPDT. I have an engineering background, so it was easy for me. I offer no warranty or help other than whats posted here, so good luck.

Re: Radio Mute Wire

Awesome - Thanks for the schematic. It saves me from having to do a bunch of experimenting. I've actually got most if not all of these parts laying around in a box somewhere from back when I was techno geek. Um, oh wait, I guess still am...

I did the same as DSS90c. It works great. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.

I dont suppose you would be able to "dumb this down somme." I am moderately familiar with what is going on in your diagram, however when you say you cross the Mute button...what do you mean? I am fairly brave with what I will try and for something like this I would be willing to give it a try.

TIA

Re: Radio Mute Wire

Thinking about getting a Parrot.. (hmm that sounds strange)
can this be made to work with the 6 disc, non-RF radio?

The mute button is a momentary contact switch on the circuit board that holds all the control buttons such as the CD, SAT etc. The idea of the circuit is to do what your finger does when you hit the mute button. So the 2 wires in the diagram that are labeled 'to mute' are simply soldered to each side of the button labeled mute on the circuit board.
