Almost sounds like the probe is not in the grease. Maybe the probe is to high. Never mind I looked at the pic, and if it isn't in the grease he will have a big problem.

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

Mr. Haney, I don't if you noticed but, I have an aluminum diff. cover that has 3/4 quart more capacity than OEM cover. So I think, and I may be wrong, that helps the oil cool faster. Also I think the oil heats up because of the load on the gears and bearings when accelerating.

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

He is right, it would take a little while for the oil to heat up. You should not be seeing an immediate rise it temp from a hard acceleration.

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

I should have said it rises gradually. Not instantly. It also cools gradually. Sorry about that.

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

Temp sounds about right. I shot my old rear end (with one of those temp guns) after towing my boat 30 miles and it said 230 on the old Pumpkin. Now with the new 05 rear end it reads about 215 after a short tow.

If heat is not a contributing factor then why did Nissan change to a diff cover with cooling fins and switch to synthetic lube, where the main advantage is withstanding higher heat levels without thermal breakdown?

I agree Beltbuckle. And thanks for your input Krh2. And I'm not trying to start an argument, just want to hear everybody's thoughts. I respect you all.

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

And BTW, has Nissan or Dana officially explained what is the cause of the diff. failures ?

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

It would be interesting to have someone else report who also has a guage installed on the stock diff cover. And towing temps.

Getting too hot = loss of lubrication = more friction = metal failure. But so far your temps seem fairly normal.

One quart Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer, the rest Nissan Synthetic.

If my stock finned cover had an access hole like the pml cover I would install a temp guage. To much of a wimp to try to tap one myself.

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

I wonder if the Nissan Diff cover extends out far enough so that the sending unit does not touch the gears. The PLM cover is 2 inches deeper than Nissan cover.

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

220 does sound a bit warm for just riding around town. I did some monitoring a while back with surface mounted RTDs and got some good readings. Never saw higher than about 210 degrees.

See this thread Going to do some temp monitoring, need input for more info.

Re: Installed Diff. temp gauge

Interesting, cttitan. I wonder if the difference in temp. readings is because your readings are only surface and are affected by the air flowing around the surface. I'm sure the temp. is warmer internally.
