Angry Smelly A/c

06 TITAN LE
Purchased in Novenber of 05, Since day one I can run the A/C WITH THE air recycling through cab. When I switch the A/C/ off it semlls moldy. I can recirculate the air from the outside and after 10 minutes the air smells O.K. again. When I run it the inside again regardless whether I run the A/C or not it smells again.
Dealer said it's my fault but can't tell me what I'm doin wrong. They sprayed a ton of "NEW CAR SMELL GOOD" into the air box under the hood, that only choked us out of the cab.
2006 Titan smells like a moldy/mildewy sock.
WHAT THE *$#!??

ANY BODY ELSE CURSED WITH FOUL AIR?

Have you changed the A/C filters?

Filters? I have only had to run the A/C/ a few times, is it possible that there is a factory problem?

You can buy crap to treat mildew in the A/C evaporater.

All air in the system, heated or cooled, goes through the filters. You should check them. Also be sure the drain hose from the A/C is open and not kinked. There is a TSB out on that.
Your A/C runs when the defroster is on, so you may have run it more than you think.

Re: Smelly A/c

If you run the airconditioner with the recycler on alot, you need to balance it out with running it with the recycler off, so that the system will dry out. I usually do this in the last mile or two from my destination.

Re: Smelly A/c

before I come to my destination a turn of the a/c button and just vent for 1-2 minutes. It still blows cold. it clears all the moisture in the vents. I do that in all my cars. makes a world of difference. when I don't do that, it will stink.

Re: Smelly A/c

This seems to be a problem with most newer vehicles due to the change in the what is used in the AC charger. The solution that I heard recommneded was to pour a solution of 1 part bleach and 10 parts water mixed together down the air intakes in front of the windshield. I tried it and it worked.

Re: Smelly A/c

I kind of run into the same problem. The dealership said to run clean air through after you turn off the A/C. Who knows!

I had the same problem with the smell while the windows were down. The deal found that moisture had got down inside the door area, they replaced the weather stripping on both windows and the problem is gone.

Re: Smelly A/c

Elbo stated it earlier but here is a post I made some time ago for another member that had this problem, hope it helps...

ok, here is a thread I know a little something about. I had the same problem with my Dodge Ram. The problem was running the AC in recirculation mode and then turning off the vehicle and letting it sit with a lot of moisture in the condenser or recirculation filter. I don't remember which part specifically but it is only used when the AC is in recirculation. This moisture would then mold and mildew and foul the whole interior when I would start the truck. It took awhile to build up but once it does, it is some nasty stuff. The service guy told me to always turn the AC off of recirculation mode at least ten minutes prior to turning the vehicle off. This fixed the problem on my Dodge Ram and I use this same procedure on my Titan. Actually I just make it a habit to never leave it in recirculation once the truck starts to cool down. At the time i had the vehicle, I lived in Arizona and would leave it in recirculation mode al the time. Well, until the stink started to happen. This was covered under the Dodge warranty and I would think that Nissan will also cover it. Have them check it out, it should be under warranty and if you have this problem it is easy to prevent once you know the cause.
