Backup Camera Poll

OK, I am getting ready to pull the trigger on one of the "CCD Camera w/Night Vision" backup cams from eBay.

Well now I am undecided as to where to mount the camera when I get it. So my options are on the tailgate bib, on the tailgate itself below the bib, on the rear bumper near the plates, on the trailer hitch.

I like how the ones on the tailgate/bib look but am concerned about wiring through the tailgate and the cam not being usable when the tailgate is down with the bed extender.

The one on the hitch looks the easiest to install but it does not look too "factory".

Where have you guys mounted your back up cams? If you don't have one installed, where would you want to install it?

Additional pics and comments from current owners would be great.

10pages of backup camera searches yielded these great photos:

Edit: Option 3 was supposed to be on the rear bumper near the rear license plate.

Re: Backup Camera Poll

i dont know about drilling on to the truck like that. thats just me though. i would probably mount the camera between the hitch if i had one or right center of the license plate.

Re: Backup Camera Poll

The problem I've heard about the license plate cameras is that the license plate lights blind the camera at night. In one install I've seen the person ended up removing one light in order for the camera to work at night.

I like the Ford and Tundra solutions which place the camera near the handle so that it's up high enough to see the hitch.

Re: Backup Camera Poll

I was also thinking about drilling straight into the bumper and line up the camera with the rear sonars but am a little concerned about the camera being skewed to the side.

Does anyone have pics of the stock Armada backup cam location?

Re: Backup Camera Poll

FYI: I have an Eiger back up camera installed under the bumper beneath the lower shelf on top of the hitch box beam. If I was to do it again I would install it higher up on the tailgate bib or just below.
The reason is you have very little to no depth perception at such a low elevation.
The view is clear an panoramic but decieving on how far away you are from any object, person, my daughter's bike, the dog...
Just my two cents...

Re: Backup Camera Poll

Hmmm... The trailer hitch seams to be winning right now but there aren't that many people that voted so far.

Re: Backup Camera Poll

I tested (days to weeks) each of these locations. See this thread for pics of the winning location:
http://www.titantalk.com/forums/1055367-post14.html

Mounting the camera on the downward angled metal of the tailgate cost me 28$ at a local body shop and resulted in all these benefits:
  • Able to see tip of hitch ball to ease line up when Im solo
  • Able to see all the blind spots
  • Able to watch the payload while moving
  • Wires secure and neat
  • Out of the weather
  • Other pluses

I can list the negatives of the other locations if that will help.

Re: Backup Camera Poll

I would hide it just behind the tailgate release handle. The murano Is done in this fashion and works well.

Re: Backup Camera Poll

I had one below the bumper by the hitch which did not work very well (it was too low). I have one above the license plate now which is better, but the higher you can get it, the better!

Exactly- Higher = better depth perception and view of payload (and more).

When you say you can see the tip of the ball...is it that close that someone may not see it with a long drop hitch like 6inches?

Thanks BB
