Got the Garmin Nuvi 200 for Christmas and have been pleassantly surpised. Saw it on sale somewhere the other day for like $199 - cannot beat it for the money.
I have a TomTom one XL-S with the text to speech. Addresses, it's spot-on, it can navigate coast to coast with at least the accuracy of Mapquest and a billion times more convenient... plus you can calculate alternate routes.
The down side is that I can't seem to search for local POIs that I want. I tried Kohl's and it didn't find it. Giant foods? No go. A local sports goods location? No go. And I asked for "Manasses mall" and it took me out to the middle of nowhere. And it's not the first time either.
I'm going to be contacting TomTom to see if I got a bum model but in the meantime I do have a little bit of Garmin envy.

Here's my truck and an angry little force-fed 4-banger:
Garmin Nuvi seems to be the way to go. In comparisons the garmins are rated the best so it is just a matter of what model. I'm leaning towards the 360 but still looking.
I want to buy a portable gps for my truck
but I know nothung about them. Anyone have any suggestions.
Garmin Nuvi 350 sitting in recess over radio stack. I travel every week - car sits at the park & fly and I carry the Nuvi. Comes loaded with US and Canada but I've purchased the sd cards for Mexico and another for Europe. I never carry or use maps anymore.
Battery lasts about 6 hours if it is not plugged into lighter. Has MP3 player - I've loaded some of my favorite photos, you can even change the lady's voice to a British accent if you want. When I drive customers in UK - they get a hoot.
I use the Garmin GPS Map 76CSx because its portable and easy for me to use when I'm geocaching. If I had one specific for my Titan, I would buy another Garmin or the latest Tom Tom.

I have a NUVI 360 in my car and the Magellan crossover in my truck. The NUVI awith it's bluetooth is all it's supposed to be.
If you just drive they are all a lot alike within each price range. However, I Geocache and do a lot of remote camping and kayaking and such. The crossover is great for that. It "crosses over" to TOPO and the maps are excellent. It will take coordinates directly which I use a lot. battery life outside the truck is more than sufficient ... usually.
I also run a RINO 120. it can also be mounted on my dirt bike...The Garmin unit has real goos software for uploading and downloading maps, waypoints, tracks and such.
For the OP...You need to figure out your needs, do need a dedicated auto unit, or will a handheld like the RINO do and use it elsewere as well...
My son has the Garmin 60CX in color and works great...
