What do you mean by signal lights? As in signal lights is a wierd way of saying indicator light housings? or actual light signals at an intersection?
And how would the company get away with selling these? I didn't notice a single warning of law breaking or nothing...
Have you ever seen, on top of signal lights, the little round (green or black) can with what looks like a small pipe sticking out of it? That is Opticom.
What that does is read the flash beats on strobes of emergency vehicles and changes all the lights red in all directions except for the direction of the emergency vehicles.

Ohhh...that what those darn little things are...well i guess there's good news cause my strobes get distorted through the indicator housing lens due to all the ripples in it...so I wonder if it would still register the pattern? I'm sure those things are meant to sense a whole crapload of bright output...

I will tell you its not looking at the light... its only looking at 1 section of the strobe flash. It does not care at all about the light.

RyBo- no worries about the Opticomm, as your lights won't activate the system and they are not considered "emitters" for the system. Opticomm actually works off infrared light and visible light and the flash rate is crazy fast. Just possession of them is illegal (unless authorized- law/fire/ems kinda stuff).
They make the "strobes" like you have in LED versions should you ever decide to replace them. Search for Whelen Vertex for really bright, but really small ones.
Even on private property you can potentially be nailed... a lot of states laws are written around the "display" of lights. If you're in a parking lot and an officer can see them, there is a chance!

Its not that fast, and if they are strobes its not looking at the "light" band its looking at the infrared of the strobes flash. In other words it not looking at visible light at all. All strobes (non LED) produce infrared.
There are set patterns that have a different effect on system. Most are a certain beat per second. There are even codes for Buses and City vehicles non priority, depending on what city.
