I went to a farm and garden hometown place but they cut it for $1. I had to take it apart their machine couldn't cut both sides of the key but it had to come apart regardless. Be sure to check that it at least unlocks the doors and tries to start the truck before you leave.
The Lowes by me did the same thing. The guy said it wasn't possible to get a chipped blank key...even though I had two of them on the table. It took them forever to even get over to the key place....I should have just stepped back there and cut it myself.
By the way - I got my switchblade key to work. I had to cut the two lower black tabs that held the battery in so that the metal connector would fit.
I tried to zip tie my OEM key to the VATS module, but it seems to be a little hit or miss right now. Guess I will have to pull the remote start key so I can get them all programmed.
Here's another quick tip for those using the switchblade key - secure the transponder chip in the new fob with a blot of glue or something to hold it in place. I've been using mine for about a week and yesterday afternoon the truck wouldn't turn over. I realized the chip was bouncing around inside the remote and fallen to the bottom of it, which is too far away for it to work with the key. Opened it back up, secured the chip, and now it works fine.
I used a bit of duct tape to secure it. Didn't have any glue handy but I definitely know what you mean. It wont stay in the right spot without something.
Not necessarily glue, just something to hold it in place. Would be a crappy way to end up stranded somewhere if you didn't have the tools to get it back open.
I din't want to chance anything breaking. I cut all the plastic portion of the key around it off with a jeweler's saw.
Plus with a little extra plastic from the key still on it, it's a little thicker and fit snugly in the slot.
As for the glue, just don't go crazy, I used a toothpick and applied super glue to two or three points. That way it's not hard to remove later on.
Just thought I would throw this out there. Bought 2 chipped keys off ebay for $12. Had them programmed at the dealer for $45. I pulled the chip from one to use in my switchblade key (used liquid tape to hold it in the slot). Be careful if you cut open the ebay key, the chip is molded into the side. The black plastic is a pain to remove since it is completely glued to the inside.
The aftermarket case I bought came with a chip. But removed my OEM anyway because I didn't want to pay 45 bucks for reprogramming. I guess that's another option.
Where would I find a new key piece? I got mine cut and the guy said it wouldn't matter if the key was flat agai st the other. Well it does matter and the fuking thing doesn't work. I really don't wanna buy a whole new unit for $32 bucks again. Anyone had to buy just the flip key or contact the ebay seller for that piece? Dont have time right now to search so I figured I'd ask here and read tomorrow at work.
