getting chrome handles

does anyone know of a good place to get chrome handles for an 04 or is it cheaper to get the black plastic stock ones chromed? how difficult is it to get the handles out--do you have to tear the door apart and if so, is it a nightmare worth doing?
thanks

I will have my chrome handles for sale off my King Cab in a couple months if you can wait. I'm sure it would cost way more to have yours chromed.

Took about 15 minutes. For the King Cab, you need a number 1 (outside handle le/se) and a number 2 (escutcheon) for each door. If you have a cylinder in the passenger door and want to keep it, get two right-side escutcheons (they have a hole for the key). If not, just get one right-side for the driver's side and one left-side for the passenger side.
Not sure if the Crew Cab uses the same handles and escutcheons. If they do, just get two more of each.

clicky linky to see parts

Yes, the SE and LE parts come with the plastic chrome on them. Read what Rjspitz said, if you have XE with key hole on passenger front door then order TWO chrome handles off the Driver's side of SE or LE because if you don't you will lose your passenger key hole.

The SE and LE come standard with key less entry and don't have a passenger side key hole. MikeZ was nice enough to point out to me that the handle covers snap on and off and that they are symmetrical so if you get two drivers side handles, you will pop off the covers (no way to order just the covers, have to order the WHOLE handle) and put them on your XE handles, all without pulling the door panels and without removing the door handles. Its an easy job.

Parts were $28 for my KC (2 handles with keyholes from drivers side SE)

2x 80640-7s000 "grip-outside handle chrome" $10.73 ea.
2x 80647-7s000 "Escutcheon Assy" (chrome) $3.25 ea.

thanks for the link!
The itemization to the right of that parts diagram denotes "SE/LE" which is chrome. The selection for "XE" would be the black one.

Good link! Thanks Rjspitz.

I don't think that's true. I guess I'll find out when mine get here but the guy said it was just the covers and it cost me about $15 for the black ones for my King cab.

All four handles are the same. The only difference is the key holes. I'm not sure about taking them off yet. My handles should be here today though.

You do not need to take the inside panels off to remove the handles. To take the handles off, there is a small round plastic vinyl sticker over a torx screw hole in the jamb just above the lock striker (at the same level as the handle). Losen the screw all the way (do not remove it. It has a plastic clip that keeps it in place. ). This screw holds the escutcheon in place. To remove the escutcheon, I love that word, pull the handle and remove the escutcheon. To remove the handle, pull out and to the rear. Installation is in reverse order.

And yes, the XE is black, the SE/LE is chrome.

good luck.
