Big Tow mirror problem

My truck was only two days old when I came out of the supermarket to find the passenger mirror folded forward and both pieces of glass shattered. I went to the dealer where i bought the truck and got the larger heated mirror glass($50 and three weeks later) but the sales dude couldn't find a part# for the lower fish eye mirror. Today I was at another dealer(got tired of the sh1t service at the other dealer) for an unrelated problem and tried to reorder the part, figuring they probably had a part# by now(five months later.) It turns out that if you need the lower mirror, you need to buy the whole mirror assembly, which for the electric heated mirror costs almost $500. I find this hard to belive and will not pay that amount for a stupid piece of plastic. Any ideas or solutions?

I would keep an eye open on ebay. But I have seen the pair of mirrors for around $300, not $500 for one. It doesn't surprise me that you can't buy the glass only though. My boss just shelled out $450 for an Escalade mirror because he had to buy the whole mirror and get the housing painted!

It's not possible to have the lower fish eye mirror cut and attached by a glass shop?

I'd recommend Nissan parts 247 (one of the vendors on this site). I had the exact same mirror busted on my SE. I got the part from Jaime for 153 bucks shipped (give or take a buck). It included everything but the screws (which I didn't really need since I already had them from the damaged mirror). It took about a week and a half for the part to get in. Installation ~ an hour - less if you have taken the door panel off before. If you choose to install, PM me and I might be able to give you a pointer or two.

By the way - by "the part", I mean the entire passenger side mirror assembly - literally, the entire passenger side big tow mirror (housing, chrome skull, both mirrors, etc)

$500? What a mark-up!! When I bought mine in Dec. or Jan., list price was around $166. My local dealer gives a 15% discount if you order via internet. I think I would go to another dealer, because the one that you went to is definitly a STEALer.

I installed it myself in about 20-30 minutes. Even if I had the dealer install it, it still would have only costed me about $250 total, including $75 install charge.

Could one of you guys who have fixed a mirror write up a how to for the solutions list when you get a chance. I think it would be great info and will probably be a frequent repair. If you'll post it here I'll just link to this Thread.
Thanks.

Yah, anything to get another post on the board, huh Squid? Congrats on being named Top Poster!!

Removal/ Installation of Big Tow Mirrors

I'm doing this from memory, since it has been 3 months since I have done it. Sorry if I forget a screw or two. Others who have done it, feel free to add anything I may have forgotten.

Remove the three torx screws from the plate inside the door adjacent to the mirror. You have to remove the inside door panel to get to the electrical plug. There is a screw where the door handle is, under the square cover, and there are two under the cover on the "pull to close" handle, use a very small, very flat tipped flathead to remove this cover. Then you "pop" the outer edges of the door panel out like any other vehicle. You don't have to completely remove the panel, as the electrical connectors for windows/locks don't need to be removed. The connection for the mirror is at the front top corner of the door.

Once you have done this, there is a 10mm nut that you remove to remove the mirror. Be sure to hold the mirror up while you remove the nut. Once the nut is removed, pull straight out on the mirror to remove.

And as usual, installation is done in reverse order.

Pep boys, AutoZone and maybe others sells a replacement mirror, mirror only for several vehicles. This matewrial looks as though you could trim it to fit your lower mirror. Maybe worth a look to see if possible. For $500, I will do a lot of looking!

BigRed, I have a couple additional points that need to be made.

1) Don't try to remove the door panel until you've also taken the last screw out, which is underneat the armrest. The armrest must be pulled up (work from the doorjam forward). It won't come out without some force due to the three metal clips that hold it in. And when it comes, it will likely come all at once so try not to hit yourself in the face ....

2) Once all screws and the bolt are removed from the old mirror, there will still be a "christmas tree" (don't know the tech term) plug that holds the mirror onto the door. So you'll just have to pull back to get that out (it's plastic and won't break or anything). If you have the new part (which you would assuming you're doing the install), you'll see it on there and know what I'm talking about.

3) The hardest part of the install is getting the old cord out and the new cord in - correctly. Getting the old one out just takes some wiggling so that the clip doesn't get caught up on anything. Getting the new clip in is more tricky - why? Because you have to work it around and get your hand back in the metal part of the door. Then, there is some kinda retainer piece of metal that the cord must be behind (the retainer metal piece is there to prevent the cord from being in the path of the window when the window is rolled down - if you do this wrong, your window will only go down about halfway. I know this from experience, but getting it wrong didn't break anything - just gave me a little scare and required a little rework). A picture would be great, but I don't know how you could get one back in there. Just feel around on the old mirror and get an understanding of how the cord is in place. You'll figure it out.

And that is it ... sounds harder than it is. I'm in no way mechanically inclined (learning though) and I did it. Installation would have been about 150 bucks had I gone to the dealer. So I made it out only paying for the part (154 shipped by Jaime as noted above). Good luck!

hell I went to the dealerhip for a new mirror on my 86.5 SE and they wanted $400 for a new one, so I drilled the mirror back into place, didn't pivot but it beat shelling out $400 (about 1/3rd the price the truck was worth)

Again, might I recommend contacting Jamie:

That mirror lists out for $166.37 and costs you $141.42 plus $12.00 for
shipping. The P# is 96301-8S100
-Jamie

<parts@nissanparts247.com>

that was from an email from him back in November (price might have changed, but I doubt it).

same thing

I bought exact thing from them..

$177.21

installed most of it myself.. just had to have my brother help me find all the screws and drag cord through door....

you really need one of those screw drivers with the flat Y at the top, so you can pop the door snaps off..

am looking for the web site.. so hold off on buying one yet!
