Utili-Track Fishing Rod holders

Maybe I am a bit crazy but has anyone tried to use the cleats to somehow mount a fishing rod holding system in the bed of their Titan? I see how the top removes from the cleat and can be used with the bike mount , I wonder if you could mount some rod holders to a cleat backing plate and use it to keep them from sliding around in the bed.Thought maybe 4 black plastic rod holders mounted to 2 cleats backings attacked to the cab side of the bed. I know most people carry them in their boat instead of the truck but I was just curious.

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks. I intend to build some sort of fishing rod holders, I just haven't had the time to play & think about it...

At any rate, do a search on the Yakima fork mount mod - they use (and I bought a bunch of) uni-strut cone nuts which fit/work perfect with the utilitrac system.

I have an ideal in my head and was gonna use lightweight metal rods for a frame say long enough for 4 rod holders attach two 2 inch by 4 inch plates with holes to attach to the cleats and then a mesh or solid cover over the two rods to bolt the holders to. You could adjust the height of the holders to make sure a cooler fits as well. My ideal was to have the holders run vertical behind the cab . Gonna have to draw it out and stuff. Let me know what ya think

I'm reluctant to mount them vertical behind the cab, as I'm sure I'll forget about them and drive under an overpass or into a parking garage or something stupid. (I have 2 surf rods - a 10' and a 12' footer.) If you mount them vertical, put them out in front of the bumper so you don't forget about them! That also makes them a little easier to use when you're actually fishin too. :-)

I want to build something to hole 3-4 rods horizontal on one side of the bed, and if possible, keep the rods in the bed so they would be safe and - assuming I lock the tailgate - relatively theft proof. (both rods are two peice.)

Here's the Cone-Nut thread too btw:

I have beeen trying to think this thing thru also. I am neither bright nor handy so it will probably look like the white plastic 3 rod holder duct taped to a piece of cardboard and connected to the truck by a rusty coat hanger.

Put my rods in back last week. Won't fit without a bend. Damn Crew Cab. Maybe I'll get rid of the kids J/K.

I'd love to see some rod holders on the utilitrak by someone creative.

Stripers are waiting..

I can't take credit for the whole idea, but using spring nuts that you find in the electrical section of Home Depot, etc. work great. Link-> http://www.nbe-inc.com/components/unistrut.htm

It seems that the rails for utilitrack have the exact same dimensions as unistrut. I've used this to mount a Yakima Blockhead for transporting mountain bikes. The spring nuts come with various threaded holes, and I prefer the 1/4" variety.

Seems to me that you could use two of these to mount your rod holder to rather than the clamps. . .

Just a thought. My bed (KC) usually holds my rods without a bend.

I have the CC with an ARE Z series on it and here's what

I did. I can carry 7' rods without tearing one up. I also carry R/C airplanes on this setup. It's adjustable between the Z series brackets.

I carry mine in the bed using bungie cords. I hook one across the tracks about 18" from the front of the bed. I hook another one across the back about 10" from the tailgate. I lay my rods on top of the bungies from corner to corner to get the 7 foot ones in the box. Then I take a third bungie and run it over rear bungie, weaving it over and under the rods and hook it to the track. This third bungie locks the rods in place and they all just "float" in the bed with out moving around. It only takes a second it set it up, or take it down and it keeps the bed free for other things below. Give it a try. If I doesn't work for you, the bungies will still be handy for other things.

Looks nice. I thought I had it figured out and then I remembered the truxedo sticks out 3" from the rails. I can always run the rods out the back window.

Tight lines to all!

Re: Utili-Track Fishing Rod holders

I live in Brownsville, close to South Padre. I bought an aftermarket bed tool box and mounted an aluminum six rod holder made for a boat on the back of the box. Works great. I found the rod holder on bass pro.
