Side view mirror turn signals

I made some discreet side view mirror turn signals. Here's a small write-up.

The first picture shows the parts I used, wide-angle mirrors and LED arrow turn signals.

The next are the tools required, drill, spot sanding pen, and small screwdriver.

I used clear tape to put over the circuit board and marked the LED locations with a pen. A pen that smears when you write was perfect, because I needed to transfer them to the back side of the mirror.
Then I used the fiberglass brush from the spot sanding pen, wrapped with tape to prevent fraying, in the drill to sand off small circles of the mirror backing.

I then sprayed some plastic model 'window tint' spray paint to the holes so that you don't see the green circuit card under the mirror. Then mount the circuit card to the back of the mirror and reassemble.
That's it, about $35 and a little bit of work.

I haven't installed them yet. I've got a few more parts to install, so I'll wait till then.

I like'em!!

I wish I could make things like that. I can barely make paper airplanes..

Hey, I know you've taken quite a few pics, but can you take a final picture in some sort of light? I'd like to see how it looks on the truck...

Thanks!

Looks nice! Is this the kit I've seen on ebay? What does it look like when the lights aren't on?

They are not as nice when the lights are off. The holes aren't exactly straight. I might make new ones later with a jig, but these will work for now.

maybe you could put reflective tint on the backside of the mirror so as to help hide where you sanded them. I imagine the leds could light through them.

Those are cool, I like the full glass replacement kits.

I'd rather go this route and save $235 and tint the dots!

Those are nice, but pricey like Sick said. Also, there's no wide-angle mirror like mine.

That site does have a good how-to on removing the door cover though, and it's free!!

I have never understood why car manufactures started adding these to their vehicles. The only use I see for them is to remind you that you left your friggen blinker on! Then again I don't see how you could miss that by the loud click and clank it makes inside the vehicle when the turn signal is on to begin with.

They are there for someone to see your turn intention when in the blind spot and cannot see the taillights.
