Anyone that has the tranny temp gauge with the Big Tow package on an 04 switched to one of the new finned differential covers, and noticed any significant changes in operating temperature being lower? Just thinking about switching mine out possibly and seeing if there is any real world evidence showing a difference between the two other than looks. Common sense tells me it would work better, but you never know.

The tranny temperature gauge doesn't look at rear end temps it is only looking at the transmission temp. I don't recall seeing anyone who has done any monitoring of the before and after temps as you suggested but it would be interesting to see if there is any significant difference.

According to this thread, the new cover makes a 20-30 degree difference. I believe the numbers in bestatchess's post (#14) most in that thread. I'm sure it works better, but since I don't have any apparent problems with the steel cover, I'm sticking with it. I'm thinking if the old cover causes problems, I tow enough that the problems will show themselves before the warranty runs out.

Yep, me too. Just got back from towing my 8000-lb travel trailer a couple hundred miles with the stock steel cover and 85w-140 Valvoline synthetic blend gear oil, and no problems.

With all the extras that you added to your truck I don't see why you wouldn't want to install one of the new diff. covers. It's apparent that you really like and take care of your truck. What's another $100 for the Nissan cover or $150 for the PML oversize cover ??? They do help with keeping the rear cool. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck.

Herbpov,
You can bet I'll be installing the PML cover in the future, most likely over the winter. I think it is a good, functional uprade, but I don't think it is a "must have", unless you are towing, then it is a "probably should have". It's on my short list, but I'm getting the suspension dialed in first. Fox coilovers are next (in the next week or two), then the Deaver springs and airbags, and then the PML diff. cover, although it may be pushed back behind a NAV system. But I'm definately getting one, it's just a matter of time and money!
I took my truck into the shop yesterday and told them that my cover was rusting. They are ordering me a new one. I asked if it would be an 05 cover and they said it would be what ever Nissan sent.
the '05 finned cover dissapates heat much better than the old cover does on the '04's. if you are doing some serious towing, i think it would be cheap insurance to switch over to the new one in my opinion to keep your rear end cooler.

I'd think this would be a must have upgrade for '04 Titans that tow. While the old cover seems just about good enough, it could lead to an expensive repair when off warranty sometime down the road.
