Question sliding bed extender ????

Anyone know why the sliding bed extender slides are 6inches or so longer than the bracket?? Wel I had my cap put on and I couldn't fit the bed extender before the clamps and behind the clamps only extended the bed 4". So Trimmed off the plastic side so they are flush with the bracket and it was a perfect fit in between the clamp and the end cap. Did I mess something up?? It seems to work fine and will still be sliding if I take the cap off. My only other option was to try and get the stationary bed extender mount but it would have cost me some$$ and I wouldn't have the sliding option without changing the mounts out. I think I got the best solution and I don't understand why it isn't just made like this as this would give you more flexibilty in positioning the bed extender on the track??
Any comments tips?? Pics to follow tomorrow.
Thanks

Don't know why they make them that size, either. Those of us with sliding overhead racks that have done the combo mod (combining the rear rack with the bed extender) end up using the shorter slides that come with the sliding overhead racks. Everything seems to work that way, too.
