The Red Tops have a reputation for dying early if used as the main cranking battery. Yellow Tops seem to be much better. For an Alternative though, I've always had great luck with Interstate Batteries. I've had some pretty extensive audio systems in my cars throughout the years and Interstates have always held up very well. I decided to try a Yellow Top in my Maxima about a year ago and so far it's been good. Only time will tell.

I think you've got that reversed. The Red Top is designed for use as the main cranking battery. Yellow Tops are deep cycle and are designed for use as an auxillary battery for use with high powered accessories (winches, stereos, hydraulics.) If you look at the CCA of a Yellow vs Red, the Red always produces more power. Every person I've ever consulted about the differences have said this. I've run Red Tops in my last 3 trucks with no problems.

Back in the day Delco Remy made on heck of sealed cell 5 yr battery. My car was the only one to start (V8) within several blocks when it was 40 below 0 f. I don't know how they are these days and they weren't cheap either, 70.00 back in 1979.

My thought

I had a Powerstroke previous to my Titan and I learned alot about batteries. Diesels draw an incredible amout of power to heat the glow plugs on a cold day. Last winter in Mass we had more than enough nights below zero and they really hurt a battery. Long story short go to Walmart and look at thier Everstart batteries. Good warranty and alot of them have more cold cranking amps than major competitors. I think the one I bought for my Ford had 200 more the the next best competitor. If the Titan needs a new battery I am going to the big box store. Another benifit would be that Walmarts are everywhere even in the middle of nowhere.

Wal Mart - Your source for cheap plastic $hit

I've heard the same about their everstart batteries. My buddy from PA runs one in his Dodge diesel.

I bought a 36 month battery for a mitsubishi galant back in 92 and every 11 monthes without fail it died. Each time I took it to sam's club and they give me a new one and refund my origianal $7 ECO charge. so over they life of that car i made $20 and went through 12 batteries.

I had a Yellow top on my 99 firebird that was powering a 2000watt stereo and it worked wonders. Previously before the Yellowtop I had replaced the alternator and batteries twice.

I was overly impressed with the Optima Yellowtop, no dimming under load while at stop lights or anything.
