jdm hid kit problem

had a severe rain storm the other day and was driving for about 4 hours through this downpour

headlights worked great

next day however, 1 side doesnt work but maybe 5% of the time when I turn the lights on from the stalk...

wondering what i need to check other than the connections and also if anyone else has had this happen?

kit is a week or 2 old...

Re: jdm hid kit problem

It is very difficult to troubleshoot the HID kits since they are typically sealed units with high voltage output between the ballast and bulb. Check the connections first, then try swapping the components from one side of the truck to the other until you have narrowed it down to a bulb, ballast, or a cable. Once you have narrowed it to a component, the next step is attempting to get warranty satisfaction. Good Luck.

Re: jdm hid kit problem

it sounds like the ballast might have gone bad and it's only igniting sometimes. if the bulb was bad, it wouldn't turn on at all.

it's also possible that you might have a loose connection between your headlight wiring and the ballast.

did you use relays and a pull power directly from your battery? if not, you may have fried the tiny little headlight wires.

do what hyperformanceauto suggeats and swap components to narrow down what the problem is.

I basically just installed the kit and did not use anything not provided with the kit(plug and play)

getting ready to go tinker with it

Re: jdm hid kit problem

Hey Voodoo,
Mine did the same thing. Was difficult to turn on then finally quit. I think I had about 4 to 5 hours on it at best. I sent the bad ballast back and have received a notice from DHL that the replacement has been shipped. Very fast service but I'm not overly happy about having to pay them the $15.00 shipping charge + covering the shipping to them. Hopefully the new one with not be a problem.

Thumbs down Re: jdm hid kit problem

I will be sending one of my ballast back tomorrow. My ballast comes on when it wants to. Had mine for about a week. I too do not agree with the $15 shipping charge.

Re: jdm hid kit problem

it seems like there are more than a couple of people that are having problems with these ballasts. didn't you all just get the kits recently?

Re: jdm hid kit problem

one of my bulbs isn't as bright as the other. I'm going to see if I can live with it otherwise it's $15. I should have bought it local. oh well.

Re: jdm hid kit problem

Hey F00stamps,
I haven’t had my kit for a month. I do understand that anything electronic can, and with my luck, will have a problem. The company does seem to stand behind their product but I think requiring a $15.00 postal MO for any returns is excessive. They ship out replacements using DHL and the whole kit didn’t cost $15.00 to ship. I guess this is the trade off for bargains. Hopefully the replacement will last more than 4 hours.

As a suggestion for those that do have this kit. It may be a good idea to carry your original bulbs with you, just in case of ballast or a bulb failure. Law enforcement may not bother with HIDs but will jump on the excuse of one headlight.

Re: jdm hid kit problem

I have a mculloch (sp?) kit I bought in June, and one side, when it first turns on will blink yellow a few times before it warms up then works great. It has been doing this since day one does it only when first turned on and does it for about 2 seconds.

guess OEM parts would be the best to buy.

Re: jdm hid kit problem

Just swap the right ballast for the left...if the problem moves, the ballest is bad...
