My OEM Nissan bug deflector has recently been identified through the process of elimination as the culprit of my whistling sound while driving. I took the deflector off, and now the truck sounds fine. Problem is I want it on the truck... What have folks done, or what ideas are out there to fix this problem? I thought of adding sound dampener to the backside of the deflector, or painting it. It starts whistling around 45 MPH. HELP.
Realistically, aerodynamics is a pretty tricky science. Smooth would seem to mean "quiet" although that isn't always the case. I have a notion that the whistling is made by the air passing off the top edge of the deflector. You may try to take a fine file and "dress" the trailing edge of the top of the deflector a little. This may help.
Fine print: I am not an Aerodynamics Engineer - just my .02.
I'm also thinking, it may also be from the air passing through the drain holes in the front of the deflector - on the front bend area. These "slots" may need to have rounded, less sharp edges as well. Once again, I'm just applying scientific conjecture here, not experience.
i have the lund bug shield and she whistles too, only at speeds of 65 and up though. so switching wouldn't solve the problem. unfortunately, it is likely something you will have to live with. Aerodynamics of titan didn't count on rock chip avoiding and bug jetstream forming aftermarket goodness. whew, that felt good to say! Now i am confused.

Your dealer didn't by chance have an employee named Bubb Rubb? Sorry I don't have anything constructive to say, just that the title of the thread reminded me of that silly guy who became an internet star a few years ago....
Bug shields make pick-up trucks look "nose heavy". I got a nice Lund for my Dakota several Christmas' ago as a present and had to force a smile....then lied and told her it was the wrong part #.... I finally told her that bug shields just ain't for me.....She laughed and said she got it because every nice truck I see with a sheild on it, I make the comment about how much cleaner it'd look without it....and the look on my face when she gave it to me was exactly what she expected. She thought that I would install it just because I'm a nice guy and was suprised that I actually had the nad's to send it back. Everybody was in on the gag and they still laugh about it every Christmas.
