Re: Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Just finished my audio control install. The only thing that I noticed that was different from Elbo's install was the size of the torx to remove the cover on the back of the steering wheel was a T20 and not a T25 and I had purchased the steering wheel puller, but the steering wheel came off with no tugging just came off very smooth. Anyway thanks for the great instructions so that a shade tree mechanic like myself can understand.. Oh yeah my truck is a 2006 SE.

Re: Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Mach1
I to had a hard time finding a T9. I ended up finding it at Home Depot in a precision screwdriver set cost me about $18. Hope this helps you out some. Install went very smooth. Thanks again everyone who tried this out and found out that it could be done. I am so excited, now if I can get that overhead compass/thermometer done I will have gotten every option that I wanted.

Re: Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Ok, FINALLY got my part and just installed it. It was a piece of cake. I havent ops. checked it yet, but it better work!

A few things I would like to add:

The sizes you need are T20 and T10. I drove all over town to find a T9, and it was a T10, which I had the whole time.

You only need to wait 3 minutes after disconnecting the battery, not 8.

The factory workers do a quick and sloppy install as far as the wire routing goes. Take your time and utilize the clips for the wires in the back cover. Just use common sense and route them neatly.

And if anybody wants to use a torque wrench (i did) the values are 25 ft. lbs. for the wheel nut and 8 ft. lbs. for the air bag bolts.

Re: Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Oh, one more thing. The proper diagnostic check for the air bag to make sure its working properly is this:

turn the igniton key on and the air bag warning lamp should stay on steady for 7 seconds, and then turn off.

if it starts blinking after the 7 seconds, you have a problem

Sorry about that Mach1, But I assure you mine was T9, so they must have changed it, or my set is wrong. I used the shop manual to do it. I'll double check it but I was copying from it, and I thought it said 8 minutes,

Re: Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Farkin Awesome,
Just ordered mine. Have been carpin about how to do this since I joined the forum. Got replies like "An XE HA HA," at least that is how it felt to me. I bought my XE for 2 reasons one, the most obvious, $$ Price $$. And 2 if I wanted extra feature on it I could install them myself. only Extra thing on truck, installed at dealership, was the bug deflector due to I was driving like 2500 mile on vacation starting in 3 days and did not have time to wait on a web order. Sides I thinks OEM bug deflector is sharp.

Re: Adding Steering Wheel Audio Controls

Mines an 06, and it was T10, so maybe they changed it to a more common Torx size.

And the 06 manual says three minutes for air bag, maybe they changed that as well.

Oh, took it for a drive. Works great...
