yeah, i agree with you on the whole drain thing. I dont really see the purpose of them. I suppose rain is supposed to run down the bed rail support and into the drain hole, but the rail is covered with weather stripping, so its not going to get in there anyway. I havent had it in the rain yet, but it seems pretty weather tight.

Dont sweat the drain tubes, you can leave them off if you want. I ran them from the connection on the cover, down through the front bed tie downs and just kind of angled them towards the holes that are in the front of the bed, where the bed bottom meets the front wall, so any water will kind of flow in that direction if it even gets to the drain tubes in the first place.

I dont expect a water proof cover, and thats not an issue for me.
Have you noticed any rattles or squeaks from the cover? I put mine on last week, and it squeaks and rattles badly over bumps. I can hear it with all the windows up, and if I drop the rear window, its REALLY loud.

Also, does yours fit very well? I feel like mine is too tight at the back, I can barely close my tailgate.

The way it is installed too is not good in my opinion, it should come with pre-drilled holes or something, because if you mess that part up, the cover will never work right. I thought I had everything aligned and perfect, but the way it ended up, I think its too far back. When my gate is closed (which is very hard to do by the way), one of the panels looks bowed up, and the weather-stripping at that point is wrinkled from the stress. I may get my Dremel out and make the holes bigger to move it forward. Maybe this will make it fit better and reduce the squeaks and rattles.

Needless to say, I am NOT HAPPY with this cover, or my decision, and wish I had ponied up to the Retrax. If you want my opinion, don't get this cover.

Re: BakFlip - who has it?

Sounds like you installed yours incorrectly. It has to be all the way forward before you drill the holes. Mine fits perfect and doesnt sqeak or rattle at all. The front section extends past the front of the bed, almost touches the window when installed correctly. The rails have to be full forward against the front wall as well.

the tailgate is almost flush with the rear of the cover, it slides under it slightly

If u struggled to install this one, you will probably even have more difficulites with the retrax.

you should be able to fix it though. Just play around to you get it right, and then drill new holes. If you butchered up the plate where the holes are drilled to bad, it is easy enough to replace as well. just a piece of aluminum and a couple rivets.

take your bolts out, close the tailgate and reposition it, and then redrill. dont drill with the cover open like the instructions say, drill with the cover closed all the way. the video on the web site is better instructions than the ones included with it.

Yeah, I'm going to try the dremel thing this weekend to extend my holes forward a little. Hopefully it works.

That is my point exactly, though, if it had predrilled holes, this mistake would not be possible!! Oh well, hopefully I can make it work. It is a nice looking cover, I really hope I can get it to fit properly.

Re: BakFlip - who has it?

an update on the drain tubes. I had it out in a slight drizzle the other day, and the drain tubes did indeed have water in them, just a few drops, so they work. it wasnt heavy enough rain to see if the bed will get wet without the tubes routed externally though. have to wait and see on that one.

Re: BakFlip - who has it?

i can see your point on the pre -drilled holes to an extent. i imagine with the differences in manufacturing tolerances all the beds arent exactly the same, thus its more of a custom fit when u drill your own holes.

make sure your bed rails are full forward against the front wall when u clamp them down, then slide it forward withthe tailgate closed and the cover closed so you can see when it looks to be in the best postion. this part was a little tricky, because i could have slid it even farther forward, but then there was a gap at the tailgate, it will kind of snuggle into a little groove when its right.

you might be able to just drill new holes without the dremel

It may no be the same thing, but when I installled my Advanced cover, it squeaked pretty badly and I came to find out that the squeak was actually from the plastic bedrails. I figured it was from the extra weight of the top on it. i just put a few peices of weather stripping underneath a few spots and no more squeaking. Just a thought. It may not be, since you said the cover is actually in the bed though.

Re: BakFlip - who has it?

the bakFlip comes with weather stripping pre-instlled where the bed rails contact the covers rails.

The Advanced did too, I mean the noise was actually coming from underneath the bed rails. The rails themselves were squeaking, I am guessing from the extra weight of the cover or they were not installed at the factory correctly.

OK, I just spent an hour or so fiddling with the cover, and I think I found my problem. First of all, I found that I did have the cover all the way forward. The inside rail at the front was up against the bed rail in the front.

I think my problem is those hydraulic jacks that hold it up when all the way opened. When closed, they are putting pressure on the cover, and causing it to bow up. Also, with that pressure, the entire thing is pushed back towards the tailgate. When I took those off, it closed much better, and after a test drive, is rock solid with no rattles. There is also no bowing or rippling of the weather-stripping when closed.

The problem is obvious though. I bought this cover because it gave basically full access to the bed if and when I haul tall objects. Without those, the cover has to rest against the cab when fully opened, which I don't like at all.

I guess you didn't find this problem on yours. If those jacks could be about a half inch shorter, I think it would all work well.

Any thoughts?

Re: BakFlip - who has it?

the hydraulic jacks dont determine where the cover is positioned on the bed, just hold it in place when opened fully. im not following you there.

my cylinders kept if from hitting the cab when open, but i actually would like it to hit the cab, more room that way. and it has a rubber rub strip on the window, no paint damage.

When closed, the jacks were pushing up on the back edge of the first big panel (the edge almost in the middle of the bed). Like I said, it made it bow up, when I pushed it down, it would bow up again. It happened with the tailgate down too, so I know it wasn't the pressure of being closed that was causing it. I know it shouldn't matter, but when I took them off, everything closed much easier, and it didn't bow up. Thanks for all the tips, I'll just run it without them for a while, probably indefinitely.
