how to paint your engine cover...

hey all... well i have been wanting to paint my engine cover for the longest time but i have no idea where to even start, meaning i dont know what type of paint to use.. how many coats to put on, any prep work needed, anything i need to do to keep it maintained, or anything that is needed to put on after it is all painted, etc... also i have heard of some people paint cracking or rippling, what causes this how can i prevent this? any help would be great guys... there are some awesome painted covers out there and i know someone can put some input in! thanks again, sorry for all these questions lately guys!
