Utilitrak in non-utilitrak based Titan. Is it safe?

Hello,

I bought an 06 crew cab titan w/o the utilitrak system. When I went to the dealer to have it installed, they told me that they won't do it as it goes into a special Titan bed built for it.

A couple of questions:

- Can the extra welding points be added to the bed?
- Has anyone added the utilitrack after the fact and is it safe to carry a canoe even w/o the welding points?
- Are trucks w/o utilitrak ready to accept the system? Any drilling, threading of screws etc needed to install them?

Thanks,

Mike

I can't imagine there being a different bed ? I think your dealer is smoking something...

The dealer mentioned a bed with additional welding points to strengthen the area where the rack attaches to. Even this does not sound like a smart move on Nissan's part cost-wise.

it is a different bed (slightly). It is "strengthened" in 25 more places. How many of those are welds I don't know. you could do it, But I wouldn't torque things down real tight using the side rails, the bed may bow slightly.

The bed IS different, has a whole bunch of added attach points built in with floating nuts for the Uni-Trak hardware...

Yes and I think there are steel C-channel pieces that go across under the bed to distribute the forces from the channels.
You could add the tracks if you want, but it's not going to be a bolt-in deal. And I don't know how you'd go about reinforcing the bed along the sides, since you really can't get in there.

This is what I recomend looking at if you want a rail system:

If I was looking, this what I'd install on my truck...

Re: Utilitrak in non-utilitrak based Titan. Is it safe?

I posted somewhere else a week or two ago.

I'm putting the two rails in the bottom of the bed, I'm using heavy Flat washers and nuts with the supplied metric bolts that came when I bought the rails. Rails cost about $35 each. Since the cleats are only rated 299# ,it should be fine.

I'll look into fitting a full length aluminum channel under the bed to be extra secure. I figured they had Thread serts of some sort, but I doubt it is extrememly reinforced, considering it is holding just a few hundrede pounds.

I hope to get back to this project in two weeks (labor day weekend?) I'll post here again. I'm just doing bottom two bars.

Saw 4 cleats on ebay go for $29, beats the $187 I paid after a 20% discount!
