Truck Bed Tent Review: Napier Sportz III

Napier Sportz Tent, Napier Sportz Truck Tent III

Got it for about $215 shipped with some August deal they had going (regular $230-$250). Arrived in about four days from CA to East Coast.

Comes with a bag.

1st time setup: during a bright sunny, lazy afternoon day with no clouds and plenty of time to get things right.

Actually no, it was at 9:30pm, in the dark, straight out of the box, immediately after driving four hours.

I've set it up again, and although the directions say to build it in the bed, I actually think it's easier to build it on the ground and lift in into the truck bed.

Here are some pix at night without the canopy installed.

The directions pretty much suck, but it sets up just like any other tent. The only weird thing is the nine straps that are supposed to hook into the bed. They kind of baffled me. I'm not sure if the poles are supposed to terminate inside the bed rails, or right on top (depends on how you adjust the straps), but I let mine go over the rails and it made for a nice shelf on the inside of the tent.

Overall, sleeping in the bed is pretty sweet. There's a sleeve that runs from the tent through the back window of the truck, so blowing up an air mattress in the back was no problem. Sure beats sleeping in the cab, or overpriced hotels (for our frequent travels). It's no camper though. And you can't drive with the tent setup.

So, yeah. Truck bed tent sleeping is a step in the right direction for me. Good price on the tent, paid for itself in two weekends.

That looks great! I have the Nissan tent and the issue I have with bed tents is it's a little hard to climb in and out of the tent. My next trip Ill definitely bring a step stool.

looks good.... i have the adventure one and it too was easy to put up, once i found the directions sewn into the bag.

the straps on the inside clip under the bed rails to keep the poles from pushing thing bottom off the rails...... at least that's what mine did.

Yeah I felt that too. We still had the trailer hooked up so I could climb down on the tongue. That or I used a cooler on the ground.

But once I was in, I was like, "s***, don't really feel like leaving again".

Thanks, man. That's where I got stuck. I didn't know how tight to adjust the straps. I had a feeling they were supposed to rest on top of or inside the bed rails but I didn't feel like messing with the straps anymore when it was late.

Overall, though I thought it was cool. I was like, woah! I'm sleeping in my truck! Good sleep too.

yeah, i threw some carboard down, an air matress and a 2 inch piece of memory foam SO comfortable.

normally I wouldn't do all that for myself, but i had the lady with me... plenty of room for both of us though, and the tent was high enough to maneuver..

Re: Truck Bed Tent Review: Napier Sportz III

looking at getting a bed tent and i was wondering if any body has heard of the quality of the ozark trails brand one you can buy from wal-mart.com? its 59 bucks plus shipping but if it is the same quality as the napier sport III then its a good deal. hell i think the wife is going to let me get one for the rest of this season and if we like it then we may buy a better quality one.

Sweet pics, DeadRiver! Your truck looks great with that color/wheel combo. Bed setup with tent looks comfy.

teksupport, I think you're referencing this bed:Ozark River Bed Tent from Wally World $59.00"

One commenter on Walmart said their rain fly did not cover enough area and they got wet. The Napier has a rain fly, but I did not set it up. I liked the Napier had a canopy over the door, like a porch.

Looks like the Ozark on has floor, but it's not too tall. Good deal as long as you stay dry. Not saying it won't keep you dry, just checking the comments on the walmart site.

Have any of you used one of these in a good rain? If so are they water proof? They seem like they would leak to me.

No I have not. Light rain in the morning and I didn't even have the rain fly installed.

I don't think it would leak based on its construction. It's just like any other tent I've slept in. Bonus points for being off the ground which is the only place i've gotten wet while camping in the rain.

Re: Truck Bed Tent Review: Napier Sportz III

I don't want to be a killjoy, but I must be missing something.
What is the advantage of this set up over a tent you set up on the ground?

It just seems to be hard to get in and out of.
Small space with no room to stand up.
If you wanted to go anywhere, you have to take it down and set it up again.
Anything in the bed has to come out before setting it up.
They retail for more than a comparably sized freestanding tent.

I've slept in the truck a couple of times and that seems
a lot more attractive. It was actually comfortable.
Maybe it's just me, somebody elighten me.

What if you have a tool box? Can you use the tent with a tool box installed? The one Blevinger has doesnt look like it would work, but the one Deadriver has might.

Re: Truck Bed Tent Review: Napier Sportz III

Sorry I'm late to this thread ... but, I am interested in the truck bed tent you have reviewed here.

DeadRiver, specifically do you have the Napier Sportz tent or another brand/model? it appears to have a nice lateral arched support system from head to toe where the Napier appears to criss cross from corner to corner.

I just got a new (used) bass boat and starting to head out with boat in tow. The bed tent looks like a SWEEEET solution!

Thank you all for the great illustrated thread.
