I personally wouldn't recommend altering the factory air box. What alot of people don't realize is how much engineering goes into the stock set up for max power and reliability.
You do realize that much of that engineering, r&d, money, etc, was put into making the intake quiet? Max power wasn't at the top of their list when designing the airbox. Of course the Nissan engineers could have made the Titan have a similar CAI to the K&N or Volant, but they have a fine line to walk. They must balance reliability, power, and comfort to match the most broad spectrum of potential truck buyers. Obviously many of us would like to have more power, but for every one of us is another truck owner who'd rather have a quiet and comfortable ride. So my point is that car manufacturers don't necissarily design their products to perform to their full potential. That's why there are almost always gains to be made (albeit small ones) with aftermarket mods.

Well noise reduction is another factor that did go into the air box design how ever there are many many other facters behind the engineering of something as symple as the airbox. There is no way the after market can test their products the way the factory did

I'd say noise reduction is pretty much the most important factor in the design of a factory airbox. It really serves little other purpose. And I wouldn't say the aftermarket can't test it's products like the factory did. The factory's goal is to build a complete vehicle as cheaply as possible. Aftermarket companies must build higher quality parts if they are to stay in business. The aftermarket offers far better replacements/upgrades that what's available OEM.
