Timing Advance

Anyone have this done yet? I had it advanced on my Altima by 3 degrees and noticed low end gains but nothing on the top end. I would assume by doing so that you would have to change grades of gas since the Titan only requires 87.

Mine is right on the money at 15' btdc. That's a heck of a lot of timing to be using 87 octane IMO...I don't know if more would help or hinder seeing as how it's pretty high to begin with...

The stock Altima 3.5 sits at 15 BTDC so we moved it up to 18 BTDC, anything more and the ECU starting retarding the timing. I was already running 93 oct. per factory specs.

Don't think you can advance the timing without a flashing the computer. When a aftermarket tuner finally comes out, i'm sure it will advance the timing a bit.

Actually you can use the Consult II to adjust the timing. Thats what we used on the Altima. Took about 5 min's and I was on my way.

I would love to have one of those. .. It plugs in to the serial link under the driver's side dash, right? I saw one on Ebay for $129 that linked to a laptop and included the software.

Do you have 93 at the pump out there? The highest pump gas here is 91, if you want anything higher it starts at 100 octane and you have to go through someone like VP Racing Fuels for over $4 a gallon.

The Consult II is actually around $2000 + so if you saw one for $129 you better grab it fast. You might be refering to an OBDII analayzer of some type. Yup, here in GA we have 93 oct...with all of us driving around town like we are in a Nascar race we have to have decent fuel, LOL

That's probably what it was then... Just the OBDII serial link and software. But it claimed to do so much. Do you think it would be worth having anyway? We have a laptop, I think it would be nice to be able to drive around after each mod was done to see how the truck reacts. Do you know if the cheaper one allows you to change the timing in the same way as the Consult II?

Do most Nissan techs have the Consult II?
Will it modify fuel curves or just timing advance?
How much were you charged to adjust the timing?

All Nissan dealerships should have the Consult II otherwise they would not be able to diagnose/work any problems for the new Nissan's. The Consult II can modify many settings but the fuel curve is not one of them to my knowledge. The tech did not charge me anything since it was the first 02 Altima that he had tried it on so he wanted to see for himself if it really worked. If you really go through the ESM you will pick up on some of the features or modifications that can be performed through the Consult II.

I know very little about this sort of thing, but I will tell you that the master tech at Champion Nissan in Katy, Texas tried to advance my timing with the consult II. Once the modification was complete, the device asked that the vehicle be shut down and then restarted (I guess to reset the computer). Once he started it back up and checked the timing again, the computer had reset it to its factory setting. It basically would not allow him to do it.

You guys are adjusting the ignition timing...

You may look into adjusting the valve timing a couple of degrees, you may get more bang for your buck. That requires taking your truck apart though.

My tech thought the same thing would happen so after turning the car off then back on he verified that the timing was still set at 18 BTDC. He then asked that I come back in a week to verify that the timing was still advanced which it was.
