To be fair, If you go to www.mobil1.com they will tell you that it is o.k. to use strait from the factory. I am 56 years old and am too old to change a good thing. I have never had a problem with an engine and I use synthetics but only after break in. Right or wrong, thats my story and I am sticking to it. They are selling oil and I am trying to protect my engine. I will just play it safe.

the idea that they cause leaks is just an myth or wives-tale.

Sythetics flow better - period. They do not cause leaks, but it is possible for them to flow through gaps that dino oil clogged in.

But I'm also not over-compulsive. I would leave the factory oil in for 3000 miles, checking weekly the levels (because that's what I always do) then change to Mobil 1 / Amsoil / Royal Purple (I prefer Mobil 1, but those 3 are the best, and I consider them interchangable) with a new filter (Mobil 1, Amsoil, Purolator).

This is also a great time to add an auxilary cooler, and a dual filter and remote-mount setup. These increase capacity, which increases cooling and oil life, and the dual-filter (with bypass microfilter) increase filtration dramatically.

I do not own a Titan. I am actually looking at purchasing one, however.

I own a Toyota Tacoma and a Volvo 850 that I have installed remote oil filters in. I do not have pictures on me, but I can take some. This is the kit that I used in both. It allows me to run a larger filter, and a second "micro" filter, as well : http://www.amsoil.com/products/bf.html

Summit Racing and Jegs will have similar products for less. I paid $50 for the amsoil one, but that was through a hook-up. The generic kits average around $50 for everything you need, except the filters, which run between $2 and $15 depending on what you get. I run a Mobil 1 filter (for a Mustang V8) and an Amsoil filter (micro-filter bypass) on my Tacoma (3.4L V6). So it's pretty easy to see how I'm getting a better filter (Mustang V8) along with a bypass microfilter, and increased capacity. Not to mention swaping filters is so easy now -- I don't even have to go under the truck!

An oil cooler is closely associated with the Titan's oil filter. See Service Manual LU-10. Be sure to take this into account in connection with any remote filter arrangements.

Thanks Potroast, interesting product.

Getting the piston rings to seat properly has more to do with how you drive the first few hundred miles than the motor oil you use, as long as you aren't throwing teflon or something in there.

I changed my oil myself this past weekend, used the Nissan filter and Mobil-1 5W-30 oil. I am not sure why everyone is using such different weights? I am just using what's listed in the manual.

Something a little scary, this was my trucks second oil change, the first was provided by the dealer, no charge. Well, I pull the drain plug and go to change the copper washer, and the old one had black paint around the edges from where the oil pan was painted at the factory. So, they either didn't change the washer or didn't change the oil! Maybe they suctioned it out through the filler? The area under the filter looked very clean as well, not a drop of oil anywhere.

People choose different weights, because the same weight varies by brands. M1 is know to be on the thin side of 30 weight oil, and that is why some choose to use 40 weight instead.

thin or not, it's still a 30w oil. I use 5w30 in my trucks... But it has been recommended that I try 0w30 amsoil.

No thats just a typical loose GM engine and even blue smoke on a new GM isn't a problem according to everyone that I tried to get an answer from on my last, and I do mean "LAST" GMC. I believe it's within GM specs to have a piston hanging out the side if the block.

Don't they have a song about those GM pistons? Something like this:

I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna,
I was playing soft while Bobby sang the blues.
The Chevy's pistons slapping time, I was holding Bobby's hand in mine,
We sang every song that driver knew.
