Well i looked it over pretty good with flash light to look inside and it all looked fine, checked all the hose clamps and all were tight and snug even checked the tubing its self hoses and everything no cracks or holes, I also checked the filter there doesnt seem to be any over oiling to iti didnt add any when i put it in either. Needless to say im stumped. Im wondering now if the dealer really checked the computer or not just how he talked im knd of doubting it now. I mean hell the computer logs that stuff right? but i did not get the service engine soon light sooo... Do you think i might put it back on and leave the batt neg side un hooked over night and try it again?
I really miss that sound with the CAI I must say it does keep my foot out of it.
Thanks for all your help.

Generally a CEL comes on either when a code has been thrown twice in a given time or depending on how severe the problem is. If you had a problem but the CEL did not come on, more than likely a code was stored in the ECU. My Altima acted really funny one night, extreme hesitation to redline. I got home and ran the check and pulled out the code for the Camshaft Pos. Sensor. Looked like it screwed up but not enough to activate the CEL. Take a look at EC-49 of the ESM regarding the two trip detection. Below are the manual steps to retrieving any stored codes and clearing them.
In car ECM Diagnostics/ECM Reset procedure: Starts in section EC-64
1) Sit in the driver's seat.
2) Turn the ignition key to the ON position and wait three seconds. (Do not start the car.)
3) Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal five times in less than five seconds.
4) Wait exactly seven seconds. Fully depress the accelerator pedal for ten seconds until the SES light flashes.
5) Release the accelerator pedal and start counting flashes to obtain the four-digit trouble code.
Long flashes (0.6 seconds) indicate the first digit of the code; count the blinks one through nine and write down the first digit. (Ten blinks indicates a zero.)
The next three digits follow in turn in the same fashion except with faster blinks (0.3 second) and a 1.0-second pause between digits.
The ECM code repeats intself until you turn the ignition key to the OFF position, at which point the ECM resets itself to standard get-in-and-drive-the-car mode.
Additionally, if you get four blinks of ten (0000), the ECM is indicating no malfunction.
You can clear the code (and the annoying SES light) by holding down the accelerator pedal for more than 10 seconds while the SES light is blinking. When you release the pedal, the ECM erases the trouble code(s).
SWEET!! Thanks for the tip/trick! Was that in the service manual? Must not have looked very well.
I have to take mine in for service, but had an SES light, got code for catalyst (secondary O2 sensor reading funny) and I don't want the dealer to know about this.
What baffles me is I have used K&N filters on all my vehicles with some sort of intake system, and never had an issue. Also the K&N intake filter for the Frontier attaches directly to the MAF sensor and my buddy runs his truck pretty good with that set up and never had any issues. I think these guys may have some computer bugs to iron out. I could be wrong but what do you expect Nissan to tell you? Given the option they will say your part failed before theirs.
As a Volant owner, I want to interject... have any other Volant owners had problems related to the MAFs?? The only issues I had were the obvious -- and yet to be entirely resolved -- fitment issues.
No mechanical/electrical issues, however.
The Volant is also oiled, Joe (GM) says they use a very different type of oil than K&N and that they were intending to avoid MAF sensor issues from the get-go.
My Volant was dry after about 3000-4000 miles and I have reoiled it with no issues... BUT I have had K&Ns on both of my quads for a couple of years now so I got pretty good about how much oil to use and how to avoid over-oiling.
SWEET!! Thanks for the tip/trick! Was that in the service manual?
Yup, you really have to dig through allot of the info to find it.
On a side note, I don't think it's the oil causing the problems. Maybe an excess of oil. I haven't really looked at the OEM Titan filter but the one for the Altima is oiled.

I would definitely try putting it back on. The battery disconnect is optional but not a bad idea because it will clear out any stored codes you may have. This time pay extra attention to the overall sealing of the ducts and the MAFS sensor in the duct. But most certainly put it back on and lets see if we can solve this mystery!!!
I'll be on and off the computer all weekend as usual, so please report back how things are going.
I had a drop in on my 97 Pathfinder for 20k (even cleaned and reoiled) and never had any problems. Drop in on 00 Discovery killed the MAFS after about 3k with no oiling. They had killed quite a few peoples over on the DiscoWeb when I was a visitor there.

Just a thought. Go to the maxima.org forums, and visit the 5th gen maximas section you will see how many MAF problems the maximas have, those with CAI as well with those without. Trust I know because it's a 02 maxima that I traded for my titan. My point is , maybe nissan just sucks at making MAF, or they just dont respond well to aftermarket CAI. I had a Place Racing CAI on my maxima for about 15,000 miles on my maxima b4 I traded and never had a problem with SES light , cause by the MAF however there are many org members that had a problem.
maybe you put the air sensor backwards.just a thought.i remember when installing mine the instruction said make sure you dont installe sensor backwards
I dont think anyone pursued it over there. Life is different over in Rover land, where everyone knows aftermarket=troulbe. That and the fact that they go through MAFS every 50K. It is pretty much a basic service item! I absolutely loved my Rovers but they sure made any little problem I have with the Titan look awfully minor.
