K&N CAI Owners - Please Read

I'm starting to see a very negative trend concerning the K&N and MAFS problems. In order to help those that are interested in purchasing the K&N CAI, would the current owners of this setup please inform the rest of the forum readers by responding here, if your getting trouble codes and/or having driveability problems? I'm also wondering if those that are experiencing trouble codes if it was after the filter was oiled.

Thanks in advance all,

Dale

2200 miles on mine and the truck runs flawlessly, even brought it to dealer for AC leak, they popped the hood and said nothing about the cai.

I also have over 3,000 miles on mine and no problems. I had over 50,000 miles on my Tundra and no problems. I have 10,000 miles on my wrangler rubicon also no problems.I am wondering if the people who are having problems have oiled their NEW filters before they installed them? This could cause a problem as the new filter comes pre oiled. Adding more oil would cause the filter to become over oiled, thus causing the MAF to fail. Just a thought.

It has been my experience that you don't have to clean/oil the filter very often. In fact, once every 25,000 miles or so would be plenty. I drive on dirt/ dusty roads every day and have no problems with the filter getting dirty. I remember reading somewhere in the K&N directions that the filter actually works better when its a little dirty. Plus they warn you not to over oil
or clean the filter frequently. I have read on these threads that people say they are oiling their filters and I wonder why? I don't believe that that there any Titans with enough miles on them to warrant cleaning/ oiling their filters unless they are driving in EXTREMELY dusty conditions.

I just took my K&N Cai off this morning. Yesterday it was running rough but once i got going it was ok. Was going to take it to the dealer and it started again then died. Finally got it started and got it to the dealer and they found nothing no computer readings nothing and could not replicate problem.
got in it this moring and Bam did it again then died and would not start.
Mine has been in for about 800 miles so i have not oiled it.
I took it off and put the stock one on and it started fine. Im still not sure if its the K&N or the Computer and me disconnecting the batt. is what fixed the problem.

The stalling and dying with no codes is a curious one. When you install the MAFS into the duct of the K&N CAI, is it blocked by anything inside of the duct? Like perhaps a piece of the duct material that should have been trimmed off so the MAFS has an unrestricted air passageway? Also is there a gasket that may not be sealing well when the MAS is installed?

Thanks for your time Lunatic....

I didnt look inside the tube or around the MAF, I was running late for work as is and tools were being thrown around everywere. managed to get the K&N out and the stock in in about 10 min hehehe.
Anyway The only other thing i could think of that was different these last 2 days was that the temp has dropped nightly low of around 55-60 dont know if that has anything to do with it or not.
I will look inside the tube and around the MAF when i get home and report back.

something i noticed when i installed my series 77 cold air intake of the hose clamps three clamps where 3 3/4 and one was 4 inch i think ,but on the throttle body side the clamp never seemed to tighten up so i used factory clamp that came off the stock hose i just wonder what kind of problems would happen if the k&n clamp was letting air leak at throttle body,as anyone else installed the 77 series run into this?

I installed mine according to the directions and never placed a drop of oil on it. But the again it still killed my MAF.

For the first few hundred miles I was a bit harder on the accelerator then usual. Hearing that force of the suction that the motor draws you would think it would latterly rip your skin off if you were near the open intake during hard acceleration. I wonder if that was able to suck some of the FACTORY oil off of it. But then again, I am sure the Titan members here are not pushing the 5.6 around like a granny.

jr brings up a good point here because there's only 3 things that I can think of that will cause the engine to run poorly after a CAI installation.

1. Intake leak somewhere between the MAFS and the throttlebody (loose clamps).
2. An obstruction in the air passageway to the MAFS (poor quality of inner tube).
3. A leak at the MAFS where it mounts into the intake tube.

Some of the more obvious things would be a MAFS installed 180' out, loose electrical connection to the MAFS, or the biggie.........a dropped MAFS. Do any of these things sound familiar to those with problems?

Also I doubt a fine layer of oil from the filter on the MAFS will kill it. I know I know, I've heard and read the horror stories like everyone else, but I personally have never seen this phenomenon.....
