Volant CAI Version 2

Evening All,
I just received Volant's rev #2 CAI for the Titan, and have a few questions / comments.
Does anyone else out there have the rev 2 version? If so, any problems with the install?
I noticed that not only are the install instructions piss poor and they are but they are not current with respect to the lastest version. Only one mounting hole is present in the CAI box although the instructions indicate ( 2 ) mounting holes. Called Volant, and was brought up to speed on a number of questions I had.
I've received better,(more detailed) instructions from a $20.00 Model.
There was no mention of installing the rubber seal from the air box to fender well or what exaclty it was intended for. I also received 2 flat sections of rubber matting, one side adheasive, no mention what that was for.
For a $200.00 plus kit, they could do a bit better. Had to *****.

First question, any reason why we couldn't simply use the existing mounting gromets from the Factory air filter box as opposed to what Volant supplies?
#2 Any thoughts on re-using the Factory tube that enters the fender well?
#3 I purchased the Hyperflow Intake tube and it does not fit my model SE OFF-ROAD. How exactly would it fit? No install instructions included with it.
Last, the accessory hole at the bottom of the CAI box whick I assume would be for the Hyperflow tube, is currently open. Should this be closed off or no big deal either way?
Thanks Marc

Why dont you post up some better instructions (once you figure it out) for those that want to upgrade later. I have also received crummy directions for things I payed $$ for. Just makes the install take a little longer. Take pictures as you go! I am sure others can help you out as a few have installed the volant. I am also thinking of going this route over the K&N.

Marc,

I think that the Hyperflow Intake tube is supposed to go from the air filter box to the hole in the bumper.

As for the open hole where the Hyperflow tube would go. You should seal it of so that the hot air from the engine compartment is not drawn into the engine. All of the air should come from either the fender well area, or the ram air inlet (Hyperflow tube). The colder the air is, the denser it is, and you will develop more horsepower. Not sure about the other aspects of your installation...but I am sure that others will help you.

There are lots of posts and photos pertaining to the Volant install. Please do a search.

If you have questions or comments and you want them to go directly to someone who cares at Volant:

contact:

joe@volantperformance.com

Please go ahead and mention Lon referred you, it might help or at least it can't hurt.

He will get back to you and is ready to hear what you have to say good or bad about your experience with Volant.

Pertaining to the hyperflow or Ram Air Scoop:

The current design is for the XE. There is a difference in bumper mounts apparently between the XE and SE/LE models. Volant is supposed to come out with another Ram Air/hyperflow for the SE/LE and I am one that is waiting for mine.

Until you get the Ram Air, people have been taping over the inlet hole for this or plugging it with caps to prevent the entry of hot air from the engine compartment.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions.

At least you got instructions... had to figure everything out ourselves (previous Volant purchasers)
Here's a very useful thread for you. Explains where all that rubber stuff goes.
ATT: Volant CAI Owners ! or prospective buyers
(the later posts have the install info for the new version)

You were suppose to get a plug for that hole, and the RAM AIR TUBE only fits on the XE models for the reason that the bumpers are different. No metal inlay chrome piece in the middle, that piece hinders the ram air tube from mounting correctly.

Man I am impressed!! You guys guys kick ***!!! (pciley and Lon) Thanks alot. What they are saying sound correct. I recently got all the caps in from rubber company but they dont seem to fit right. Im taking with a new vendor now. I will find a better cap than just some tape as some of you are using. As for instructions I ll see if i can get some posted. The factory mounts sounded good to me and pciley alike I cant tell you why we are not using them. I will ask again. Finally, about the factory duct that enters the fender well? We decided to not use it because it was a little under sized. I hope I helped you guys out.( hey pciley did they send out scoop ?)

Im still up in the air over what intake to get I have had Volant intakes in the past and they were rock solid, this version seem like it was rushed, I have seen two Volant intakes on Titans and the fit was poor, So my question is how much longer until all of the bugs get worked out, everything seals properly and fits like a glove. I guess Im looking for the intake to fit and work right off the bat. Not hangin out waiting for the right airbox or caps. Tell me the kit and the ram air tube are all dialed in and I will purchase one, if not AEM will have there intake done by the end of September and I know it will be ready to go right from the start.

Same here. I want one bad but only if it is going to fit properly and the hyper tube for the SE & LE models is a must. Come on Volant, HURRY!

Hi everyone! Still trying to play catch up here with the old boxes. We believe we have ust about all the boxes back now (5 unaccounted for) and shoud get the instruction issue knocked out by weeks end. On the up side we are still getting good reviews about the performance of the kit and sales are picking up again. I will continue to check this forum but if I dont respond email me at joe@volantperformance.com By the way scoop should be finished thought they were shipping. I will check for you Lon. Hey pciley any word about your scoop? You never said if you received it?

VOLANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR TITAN
Hello I’m back!! Still could not get instructions so between the guys in the shop we made our own.

1. Unplug sensor wire. (Press and pull)
2. Remove two bolts holding engine cover down. (Cover says 5.6 Titan)
3. Loosen hose clamps on throttle body and filter box.
4. Disconnect breather hoses from factory duct.
5. Remove duct.
6. Remove 8mm bolt behind factory box (attached to fender well)
7. Lift box straight up and than towards engine.
8. Clean area on fender well where the factory box sat.
9. Remove the two factory mounting bolts from fender well.
10.Place rectangular neoprene sponge onto fender well. (Make note of where mounting hole is)
11Make a small hole on sponge where the bolt hole is locate
12. Apply trim to Volant box oval opening (press on a little at a time, may need to hold in lap while doing this)
13. Place box down onto fender well.
14. Thread 8mm bolt from inside box into top mounting hole.
15. Pull box toward fender opening until sponge touches fender and tighten 8mm bolt firmly.
16. Attach sleeve onto throttle body using # 48 clamp.
17. Remove sensor from factory box and place onto Volant duct with stainless steel screws. (Make sure sensor is facing correct direction. Clip facing up.)
18. Slide # 56 clamp on throttle body sleeve loosely. Slide duct into sleeve and snug #56 clamp down on duct. (Not too tight yet!)
19. Now remove clamp from filter and hang on distal end of Volant duct.
20. Pass filter through box and place mouth of filter on duct. (Gently wiggle back and forth to place on duct. Stand on driver side for this)
21. Bring filter clamp down and tighten filter to duct.
22. Put lid on and plug in sensor wire.
23. Standing in front of truck, Volant logo should be easily readable. All clamps should be tight and you should be ready to go.
Have a great weekend!!!!!!

HI Guys,

I just recieved my replacement air box from Volant (I had one of the original kits). I just wanted to let everyone know what an outstanding company Joe at Volant runs - not only did they stand behind the product and work out the kinks until they got it right - they provided outstanding customer service - Joe always answered my e-mails - and even followed up with a phone call today. This is one company that performs as well as it's product & I love my Volant CAI!

Joe, got my RAM AIR scoop. Worth the wait to divert away from the exhaust manifold. Have installed, but not tested yet. Any worries with over sized tires tearing the tube off? Any suggestions on an easier way to fit the tube through the inner fender liner?
I had to slice out a piece with a knife.

If you have a minute, checkout the previous Volant thread. I mentioned some more things on the install that were unexpected.
